Chiropractic Patients Recover Faster, Spend Less Money - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Chiropractic Patients Recover Faster, Spend Less Money

Author: Michael Melton

Back pain is an expensive health problem for both patients and businesses. A 2012 study reported that we spend about $635 billion on pain every year, with a significant amount of that spent on back pain. Over the years, quite a few studies have shown that chiropractic care is more effective for back pain than medical care, plus chiropractic patients spend less money on their care than medical patients do.

Because back pain is such a common problem, a group of Canadian researchers recently investigated the role that the type of primary caregiver has on financial compensation.

This was a large study of 5,511 patients who experienced a work-related back injury in Ontario, Canada. The patients saw the following providers for their first visit:
85.3% saw a medical doctor
11.4% saw a chiropractor
3.2% saw a physical therapist

The authors set out to “compare the duration of financial compensation for back pain” among patients from each care group.

The study found that chiropractic patients had the shortest amount of time receiving compensation for their pain and also were less likely to have a recurrence.

In addition, chiropractic patients didn’t need to see other healthcare providers for their pain. 75% of chiropractic patients saw no other provider, while 58.6% of physical therapy patients also saw a medical doctor.

The authors conclude:

“The type of healthcare provider first visited for back pain is a determinant of the duration of financial compensation during the first 5 months. Chiropractic patients experience the shortest duration of compensation, and physiotherapy patients experience the longest.”

Seatbelts and the Risk of Auto Injury - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Seatbelts and the Risk of Auto Injury

    Author: Donna Schwontkowski

Orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons at the Medical College of Wisconsin see a lot of spine injuries in patients who have been in an auto accident. You may not be aware of it, but the leading cause of spine injuries in your midback (thoracic) and low back (lumbar) areas is auto accidents.

In a study, doctors evaluated records of 4572 patients between 1996 and 2011 entered into the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network database who were moderately to severely injured in an auto accident. They looked for what these patients had in common.

Of 631 patients who had injuries to the thoracic and lumbar spine, almost 47% of the patients had major injuries while 53% had minor injuries. These injuries could be categorized as flexion-distraction injuries where the person has had an injury from the upper body and head moving towards their knees in the auto accident, or extension injuries where the body bends backward.

If the auto accident caused a flexion-distraction injury, the victim was usually a child or young adult. Those suffering from extension injuries were usually older adults with an average age of 65 years old, and were overweight. The auto accidents that caused extension injuries were the worst, as the fatality rate was almost 24%. Other auto accidents had a fatality rate of about 11%.

The doctors discovered that if the auto accident caused minor injuries to the thoracic and lumbar spine, the patients’ injuries were worse. This was because they were usually abdominal and pelvic injuries.

    Seatbelt use

Interestingly, there was a difference between those who used a two-point belted seatbelt versus a three-point belted seatbelt. The three-point seat belts protected against neurological injury, fatality, and worse injuries. However, in the auto accident, those who were wearing the three-point seatbelts were more than three times more likely to have fractures of the spine than with the two-point seatbelts. Those who used two-point belted seatbelts had flexion-distraction injuries most of the time. Those who didn’t wear a seatbelt at all had a higher risk of having spinal fractures in the thoracic and lumbar areas as well as dislocations.

This tells us that in an auto accident, using seatbelts will reduce injury severity of mortality but at the same time, it will also increase the likelihood of a vertebrae fracture in the thoracic and lumbar spine.

If you have been injured in an auto accident, seek proper medical and chiropractic care. Utilizing both together will help speed your recovery.

A Chiropractic Success Story of Jerry Rice - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

      A Chiropractic Success Story

      By Editorial Staff

NFL Legend and Dancing With the Stars runner-up Jerry Rice has a formula for success that's grounded in hard work, a positive attitude - and chiropractic care. In fact, he attributes much of his long-term success to regular adjustments from his chiropractor.

Jerry Rice played in the National Football League for 20 years , which is an accomplishment in and of itself, considering the average NFL career spans only 3.5 years. Widely touted as the best receiver to ever play the game, his spectacular career included 16 seasons and three Super Bowl wins as a member of the San Francisco 49ers, followed by three seasons with the Oakland Raiders. (He was on the roster of the Seattle Seahawks when he retired in 2005). Rice was named to the Pro Bowl 13 times, winning the Pro Bowl MVP award in 1995, and received the Super Bowl MVP award in 1988. He held an amazing 38 NFL records at the time of his retirement.

With all the records and accomplishments, Jerry Rice is perhaps best known for his desire to succeed and his willingness to do whatever it takes to be the best. Consider what NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue had to say about Rice in an ESPN Classic documentary:

"One off my vivid images of Jerry Rice [is] him working out at the Pro Bowl. Here you are, after he wins the Super Bowl, he's played in front of 500 million people. Less than a week later, he's out there running wind sprints to play in [an] exhibition game." (emphasis added)

Not one to rest on his laurels after retirement, Rice signed on with the hit TV show "Dancing With the Stars" for the 2005-2006 season. Paired with dancer Anna Trebunskaya, Rice finished second in the grueling competition, losing to Drew Lachey (who, along with brother Nick, sang in the pop group 98 Degrees) and dance partner Cheryl Burke. If you think the show was all smoke and mirrors, consider that participants, many of whom had little or no dance experience, formal or otherwise, had approximately six days to learn a new dance routine before each week's competition. According to reports, that sometimes meant practicing for up to five hours a day.

As much attention as Jerry Rice has received for his dazzling catches and amazing abilities, on and off the field, he has an important message to share about how to maximize health and wellness, regardless of whether you're an elite athlete, a weekend warrior or anywhere in between. Rice believes chiropractic has helped him tremendously over the years and wants others to experience the same results. Obviously, going to the chiropractor may not make you the world's best receiver (or dancer), but it can certainly help you live a happier, healthier life free from pain.

"Chiropractic care has been instrumental in my life, both on and off the field, and I am excited to share this with the American public," says Rice. "I have been blessed with a long and healthy career as a professional athlete, and as I move forward into the next stage of my life, chiropractic care will continue to be an important part of my game plan."

Rice credits chiropractic care in terms of his achievements on the gridiron, the dance floor and life in general. "Optimal health has been a key to the success of my athletic career, my dancing experience and my ability to enjoy my life to the fullest. Chiropractic care is an important part of my game plan for healthy living."

Jerry Rice is such a big supporter of chiropractic care that he recently became the official spokesperson for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (FCP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the value of chiropractic care to the public. The foundation is using Rice's image and message about the value of chiropractic care in various ways, including a full-page advertisement you may have seen recently in print. The ad already has appeared in the Dec. 15, 2008 issue of ESPN The Magazine, the January 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated, the Jan. 16/17 issue of USA Today, the February 2009 issue of Men's Fitness and the January/February 2009 issue of Women's Health.

Jerry now lives in the San Francisco Bay area with his wife and their three children. In addition to the FCP, he supports a variety of other worthy causes, including the March of Dimes, the United Negro College Fund and his own "127" Foundation. Undoubtedly, he is also preparing for his next life challenge. Whatever that is, two things are fairly certain: He will be successful at whatever he sets his mind to, and he will be better able to achieve his goal because of his lifelong commitment to chiropractic care.

High-Risk Moments for Your Low Back - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

High-Risk Moments for Your Low Back:
How to Avoid Injury and Pain

      By Marc Heller, DC

What are the high-risk times and events for your lower back? Why can you get into more trouble doing something as simple as picking up a loaf of bread from the trunk of the car, rather than doing something more challenging? What simple steps can you take to avoid injury and pain? Let's get the answers to these questions and more.

      Two Critical Moments

When it comes to your lower back and injury risk, there are two critical times when you need to be especially careful. One is first thing in the morning. Your back is actually swollen at that time. You are substantially taller, and the discs have extra fluid in them. A careless forward bend or twist first thing in the morning can do substantial damage to your discs or other back structures. It doesn't seem fair that such a simple thing, bending and twisting, something you have done thousands of times before, can suddenly cause big problems.

The other critical time is after you have been sitting. Long car drives or airplane trips are especially challenging. In this case, the culprit is something called "creep." This means that your ligaments and tendons lengthen into the position that you have been in. Think of sitting as a bent-forward position, as your legs are forward. The ligaments and tendons do not provide protection properly when they have been lengthened by creep. When you first get up from sitting, you are at risk. The longer you have been sitting, the higher the risk. If you sit more upright, with good lumbar support, you will have somewhat less risk.

Here are some common events that can contribute to lower back pain. Keep in mind that in all of these scenarios, your back was already vulnerable.

      Scenario #1:
You didn't sleep well last night, perhaps from sleeping in an unfamiliar bed after travel, after sitting too long. You get up, feel stiff, but ignore it. You sit down in a soft chair to enjoy your morning hot drink. You get up and get a sudden sharp stab in the back.

Scenario #2: You get up from sleeping, and sit at your laptop, and get entranced by a video or article. You end up sitting far longer than you planned. You get up, and can't completely straighten up.

      Scenario #3:
You get up from sleeping, drink your morning coffee, which wakes up your gut, and you go to bathroom to empty your bowel. You are a bit constipated, and have to strain. When you get up from the toilet, your back spasms.

Overnight sleeping, even a good sleep on your favorite bed, leaves your back somewhat swollen. Swollen may be an exaggeration, but the reality is that there is extra fluid in all of your joints.

If you have a good back, none of this matters. If you have a vulnerable back, it all matters. Ideally, when you get up, you should do some kind of activity that warms up and "wrings out" the excessive fluids. A short walk, some simple movements, can make a real difference. Sitting down at the computer, sitting on the toilet, etc., can get you in trouble.

So, who has a good back versus a bad back? Unfortunately, most of us have bad backs, at least in the sense that they can be subject to injury and pain at any time. In fact, studies suggest that as many as eight in 10 people experience low back pain during their lifetime. That's a lot of back pain already happening or waiting to happen. And as you can tell from the above discussion, some of the scenarios whereby people experience back pain are all too common.

How to Avoid Injury and Pain

Don't bend over immediately after sitting. Sitting, even in good posture, puts you at risk. The longer you sit and the worse the seat, the more at risk you are. Airlines are very risky; it's hard to get up and move around because of the tight quarters, and the minute the plane stops, you bend over and get stuff from under the seat, or reach up, and twist and lift to get your bag from the overhead compartment. After a long sit, give yourself at least a few seconds of backward bending and/or moving around to reset your spine. Then you can carefully, using your hips rather than your back, bend over to pick up something.

When you sit, don't slump. Slumping reinforces the risks, makes it more likely for something bad to happen to your discs or joints or muscles. So, sit up straight, and keep your back in neutral. Neutral means that you keep a bit of a lordosis in your lower back, keep the lumbar spine from slumping forward, stay more upright. This simple action can make a huge difference. Like any habit, this will require you to "Just Do It" for a few weeks.

Talk to your doctor about these and other high-risk moments for your lower back and what you can do to relieve low back pain or avoid the pain altogether. And make sure to review "Self-Care for Back Pain" in the May 2010 issue, which provides information on exercises your doctor may prescribe if you are experiencing back pain.

Relieving Back Pain during Pregnancy - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

      Relieving Back Pain during Pregnancy

Ah, the indescribable joys of pregnancy. The anticipation of new life, the intimate, developing bond between mother and child ... and the back pain. More than 50% of women experience back pain during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, and frequently the pain can be excruciating and debilitating.

A Swedish study involving 258 pregnant women investigated whether water gymnastics could reduce the intensity of back pain and the number of days taken for sick leave. Women were divided equally into two groups: an exercise group that participated in water gymnastics (one hour of relaxation exercises, performed in a swimming pool and accompanied by music) during the second half of their pregnancy; and a control group that did not participate in water gymnastics.

Although back pain intensity increased during the course of pregnancy for both groups, the exercise group reported less pain compared with the control group. The total number of reported days on sick leave was also lower in the exercise group (982 days taken) compared with controls (1,484 days taken).

Many of the joys and frustrations of parenthood will last much longer than nine months, so prepare yourself. But back pain is one frustration that doesn't have to last. If you¹re expecting a child and are experiencing back pain, talk to your doctor of chiropractic about making your pregnancy as pain-free as possible.

Arthritis Patients Choose Chiropractic - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

      Arthritis Patients Choose Chiropractic

In 1997, Americans made an estimated 629 million visits to practitioners of "complementary and alternative medicine" (CAM), compared with just 388 million visits to primary care physicians that same year.

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that many arthritis patients used CAM, and that chiropractic was the most frequently used type of care.

Even more significantly, chiropractic was also near the top of the list in terms of the number of patients who regularly used CAM, and the number of patients who found CAM helpful for their condition.

Don't let arthritis get the best of you. If you or someone you know suffers from the daily pain and frustration of arthritis, schedule an appointment with a doctor of chiropractic.

Leg pain can be sign of a dangerous heart condition - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Leg pain can be sign of a dangerous heart condition

      Author: Megan Churchwell

In the United States, almost 30 million people have peripheral arterial disease, or PAD, though the vast majority do not realize that they have this dangerous condition.

Most people assume that clogged arteries only happen in the heart. But in fact, this condition can occur anywhere in the body. In some people, this blood vessel blockage, which interferes with the flow of blood to the extremities, leads to leg pain. Such pain serves as an early warning of high risk for strokes and heart attacks, as people with PAD have a much higher risk of these serious, life-threatening health problems.

People who are over 50, are overweight, or have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes have the highest risk for PAD. Factors such as smoking and a diet high in fat can cause cholesterol, scar tissue, and blood clots that block the arteries going to the legs. If you have unexplained pain in your legs, especially if it lasts more than a week, talk to your doctor. Your doctor may perform an ultrasound test to check for arterial blockage, which indicates PAD.

To prevent PAD or keep it from becoming more serious, quit smoking, follow a healthy diet, exercise, and get your cholesterol and blood pressure levels checked. Your doctor may also advise you to take a daily aspirin or other drugs to prevent clots or reduce your cholesterol and blood pressure. In severe cases, procedures such as angioplasty or bypass surgery may be required.

Leg pain can also be a sign of sciatica which can be treated naturally with chiropractic and exercise.

Massage Therapy for Neck and Shoulder Pain - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Massage Therapy for Neck and Shoulder Pain

        Author: Marissa Luck

Massage therapy is beneficial for shoulder and neck pain, but is no more effective than other active, conservative treatments, according to a new study.

Massage therapy has long been one of the most popular alternative treatments, with ancient references to massage dating back to 2700 BC in China. Despite its popularity, few studies have examined the efficacy of massage therapy alone for neck and shoulder pain. Many studies on massage therapy (MT) included it as an adjunctive therapy in preparation for mobilization, spinal manipulation or other treatments, making it difficulty to evaluate the efficacy on its own. This has lead earlier literature reviews to suggest that there is inconclusive evidence on the MT for neck and shoulder pain.

Those literature are mostly out of date however, according to Ling Jun Kong of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ling and colleagues conducted an updated literature review of twelve studies on the efficacy of MT for neck and shoulder pain. The data included 757 participants from eight countries who were treated with a variety of massage therapies including traditional Thai, Chinese, and Western approaches.

When compared to inactive treatments (wait lists, standard care, or sham), massage led to significantly better outcomes in the short term for patients with neck and shoulder pain. In one study, MT patient were more than twice as likely to experience significant improvements in neck pain compared to standard-care patients ( 39% versus 14%). Although patients’ pain dissipated after receiving massage, their functional status (measured by shoulder range of motion) stayed the same. Whether this would change over time is unclear, since the researchers found that there was still insufficient evident to asses the long-term effects of MT for shoulder and neck pain.

Additionally, MT was found to be more no more effective than other active treatments like acupuncture, traction, physical therapy, exercise, and activator trigger point therapy. It’s possible that massage may be the most effective when combined with other active treatments like chiropractic care, however more research is needed.

Ling and colleagues concluded that massage produced meaningful short-term benefits for patients with neck and shoulder pain. They suggested that massage therapy may trigger biochemical changes that affect blood circulation, improve muscle flexibility, and loosen adherent connective tissue. These biochemical changes could play a role in mediating the body’s response to pain and inflammation. For instance, earlier studies have suggested that massage is better than anti-inflammatory drugs for improving inflammation and recovery after intense exercise.

Chiropractic Patients Have Better Knees - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

        Chiropractic Patients Have Better Knees

        Author: Marissa Luck

Chiropractic care and massage therapy was tied to better knee function in patients with knee osteoarthritis in a recent study.

The prevalence of arthritis is growing by nearly 1 million every year, according to a CDC report. An increasingly obese and arthritic population has also contributed to a rise in total knee replacement surgeries in younger patients. These younger patients may require new knee replacements within 5-10 years of their original surgery with more complications arising with each additional operation due to bone loss. Fortunately, there are non-invasive options for knee osteoarthritis that do not involve the risks and costs of surgery.

A recent study, published in the journal Clinical Therapeutics, found that patients who received either massage therapy or chiropractic care had better knee function compared to patients not seeing a chiropractor or massage therapist.

The study included an analysis of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use in 1,121 adults with knee osteoarthritis. Researchers found:
Almost one third of older adults used CAM therapies
People with more stiffness and severe knee pain were more likely to seek CAM therapies
Adults over the age of 75 were more likely use dietary supplements than adults between the ages of 65-75 years
18% used glucosamine and chondroitin in addition to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

These findings add to earlier research showing the benefits of non-invasive treatments for osteoarthritis. A 2008 study demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments improved mobility and decreased clicking and grinding sensations among people with knee osteoarthritis. Another study published last year showed that regular exercise plus physical therapy was as effective as surgery for knee OA. The benefits of exercise and chiropractic also extend to patients with hip osteoarthritis.

89% of Office Workers Have Musculoskeletal Pain - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

89% of Office Workers Have Musculoskeletal Pain

          Author: Marissa Luck

If you spend your days in an office, you’re probably familiar with the aches and pain that come with long hours of computer work. A new study showed that up to 89% of office workers suffer from some sort of musculoskeletal pain; whether that be in the neck, back, shoulders, wrists, or knees.

Although this pain can start as a dull ache at work, if left unaddressed, it may develop into a repetitive motion injury or other serious disorder. Seeking early treatment can reduce your risk for developing these conditions. Studies suggest that chiropractic care can relieve and prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, and neck disorders associated with working.

          Work-related Pain Study

To estimate the prevalence of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions in office workers, researchers surveyed 91 employees who worked at a university office setting. The employees rated their pain and responded to questionnaires on job satisfaction and health.

Neck pain was the most common complaint, affecting 69.2% of workers. Lower back pain was the second most common (58.2%), followed by knee problems (41.8%), shoulder concerns (35.2%) and pain in the upper back (34%). People with MSK complaints were also more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs. Wrist, shoulder, and low-back pain were most the significant predictors of poor job satisfaction.

Other recent research has shown that stressed, over-worked employees have an increased likelihood of suffering from back pain, headache, and shoulder problems.Stress of course isn’t the only thing causing musculoskeletal pain. Poor posture, unhealthy work stations, and previous musculoskeletal injuries can exacerbate the risks associated with repetitive motions or long hours hunching over a computer.

Doctors of chiropractic can create treatment plans that address the multifaceted nature of work-related pain. Not only do chiropractors work to correct dysfunctions in the joints and spine, they’ll also help you identify appropriate preventive measures through posture correction, ergonomic training, and exercise therapy. Some studies suggests that chiropractic adjustments may also improve your body’s response to inflammation and stress, providing you with protective benefits against further MSK injuries.

Avocado: Good for Your Waistline and Your Joints

          Author: Marissa Luck

New research suggests that not only is avocado tasty, it may help to trim your waistline and aide in arthritis management. In a new study, researchers found patients with arthritis who used supplements of avocado and soybean oil had reduced joint space narrowing. Another study found that eating an avocado at lunch may help you manage your weight.

Previous research has already shown that the fruit is beneficial for reducing the risk of certain cancers, weight management, and lowering BMI. In a recent study published in the Nutrition Journal, researchers asked overweight adults to add avocado to their standard lunches and track how quickly they became hungry after the meal.

Compared to standard lunch eaters, people who ate avocados with lunch reported feeling 26% more satisfied. They had a 40% decreased desire to eat within the three hours after lunch, and a 28% decreased desire to eat within five hours after lunch. Although the addition of avocado increased caloric and carbohydrate intake, the participants didn’t experience an increase in blood sugar levels. The study authors suggested the fruit could help with managing both diabetes and weight loss.

More concentrated amounts of avocado, taken in a pill form combined with soybean oil, could also assist in managing hip arthritis, according to preliminary research from the Annals of Rheumatic Disease. Patients who used avocado-soybean oil supplements had a 20% reduced rate of joint space narrowing after four years compared to a control group.

The patients who used the supplements did not experience a reduction in pain, disease severity, or use of pain medications however. Still, the differences seen in joint space narrowing were clinically significant. Researchers plan on testing these results further by analyzing the effects of the supplements on total hip replacement surgery rates.

Chiropractors can assist you in making the right dietary choices to reduce inflammation and pain.

Back Pain May Make Knee Problems Worse, Study Suggests - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Back Pain May Make Knee Problems Worse, Study Suggests

          Author: Marissa Luck

If you’ve got knee pain with an occasional aching back, recent research suggests you may want to take care of that back pain sooner rather than later. A new study found that patients with back pain undergoing knee replacement surgery had poorer outcomes two years after surgery compared to patients without back pain.

The study showed that patients with low back pain had Oxford Knee Scores that were 5 points lower on average compared to those without back pain, and they also scored 6 points lower for overall physical health. Patients with low back pain were also more likely to require revision surgery.

In contrast, other musculoskeletal disorders, like hip and ankle problems, did not affect post-surgery outcomes. The researchers did not know whether this difference was because back pain was more disabling than hip and ankle problems, or because patients with back pain have a higher sensitivity to pain. They suggested that patients who are candidates for knee surgery be informed that their chances of full recovery are lower if they also suffer from back pain.

Chiropractors can provide safe, non-invasive treatments for both back and knee pain. Research has suggested that chiropractic care and targeted exercises are effective for relieving knee arthritis and a number of problems causing back pain.

Are iPads Making Teens’ Bones Weaker? - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Are iPads Making Teens’ Bones Weaker?

          Author: Marissa Luck

Parents often bemoan the amount of time teenagers spend surfing the web or playing video games, and a new study could add fodder to their worries. The study suggests that increased screen time is tied to significantly lower bone mineral density in boys. Screen time includes any sedentary time spent in front of a computer, tablet, TV, or other electronic device. Since adolescence is a pivotal time for bone development, poor BMD could mean more fractures and an increased risk of osteoporosis.

Researchers from Norway analyzed data from 463 girls and 484 boys between the ages of 15-18 years. BMD was measured using a dual-energy Z-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The teens also reported on screen time use and physical activity levels.

Overall the boys who logged the most hours of screen time had the highest body mass index (BMD) and lowest BMD. In general, boys spent more time in front of screens than girls.

“The findings for boys on the other hand clearly show that sedentary lifestyle during adolescence can impact on BMD and thus compromise the acquisition of peak bone mass,” said lead author, Dr. Anne Winther, of the Artic University of Norway, as reported by Medical Xpress and Counsel & Heal.

Despite the clear link in boys, the girls who spent more time in front a screen actually had better BMD than girls with less screen time. Dr. Winther said the finding warrants additional research. The results were presented at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Musculoskeletal Diseases.

Additional screen time has been tied to a higher risk of back pain in teenagers, and more sedentary time is generally an indicator of a poorer quality of life, according to one study. Chiropractors can assist your child in making healthy lifestyle choices to decrease their chance of injury and musculoskeletal pain.

Is Seeing a Chiropractor Safe During Pregnancy? - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Is Seeing a Chiropractor Safe During Pregnancy?

Low back pain can be a serious problem when you’re expecting: A recent study shows that 61% of women report back pain at some during pregnancy.

“Despite the apparent impact it has on women, many cases of low back pain of pregnancy go unreported to prenatal providers and/or untreated,” researchers publishing in the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health wrote. Unfortunately, many conventional treatments for back pain (like drugs, surgery or steroid injections) aren’t an option during pregnancy. So what should women in debilitating discomfort do?

Researchers decided to study the effects of chiropractic care on 17 women with low back pain lasting an average of 21.7 days. The intensity of the back pain was 5.9 on a 1-10 scale, and the onset of pain occurred at 20.6 weeks into the pregnancy. For 28% of women, pregnancy was the first time they ever have experienced intense back problems and 75% said they had not suffered from lower back pain prior to pregnancy.

Each study participant was treated with chiropractic care according to the particular symptoms that the patient was experiencing. The authors reported the following:
About half of the women were self-referred, and the other half were referred by their obstetrician.
The average time to reach clinically significant pain relief was 4.5 days, while the range was from 0 to 13 days after the initial treatment.
The average number of chiropractic treatments necessary to reach clinically relevant pain relief was 1.8.
The pain levels decreased from the 5.9 at the beginning of the study to 1.5 at the end.
The patients received between 3 to 15 treatments, with the average being 5.6.
One patient did not experience clinically significant pain reduction.
There were no adverse reactions reported by any of the patients.

This corroborates other studies showing that chiropractic offers a safe solution for pain while you’re expecting. For instance, a study published in the journal Chiropractic and Manual Therapies found that 85% of pregnant patients had significant improvements in pain within three months of receiving chiropractic treatments for back and pelvic problems. Another study showed that chiropractic was more effective than standard medical care for alleviating pregnancy-related back pain. In both studies, there were no serious adverse effects of treatment.

Chiropractors use a low-force, gentler style of adjustments when caring for mothers-to-be. Plus, women do not have to worry about the potential impact that painkillers may have on a growing fetus. Instead chiropractic offers drug-free, natural relief to ensure your pregnancy is as comfortable as possible.

Good Posture: A Stance for Better Health

SATURDAY, Sept. 26, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Healthy posture is important for your well-being, but achieving it can be an uphill battle in a high-tech, high-heeled world, experts say.

"People who have better posture tend to appear more confident and knowledgeable to others. It makes them feel confident internally as well," said Alynn Kakuk, a physical therapist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program in Rochester, Minn.

Simple exercises and stretching can help your posture, she said.

One way to practice healthy posture is to stand with your upper back, shoulders and bottom touching the wall, with your feet a couple of inches away from the wall, she said in a Mayo news release.

There should be a slight space between your lower back and the wall, just large enough to fit your hands. Then, step away from the wall and try to see if you can maintain that posture.

It's also important to remember that strengthening your muscles will make it easier for you to maintain that healthy posture, Kakuk noted.

Frequent use of cellphones and keyboards can sabotage posture and place stress on the upper back and neck, leading to rounded shoulders and a lowered head. Try to keep your cellphone at eye level so that you're not bending forward, she suggested. Also, do exercises that strengthen your upper back and shoulders, such as chest exercises that strengthen your pectoral muscles and diaphragm-centered breathing techniques that release tension, she added.

Her other advice? Place your keyboard at elbow height, so your hands can rest on the desk. Position computer screens and laptops at eye level. Set your chair so that your feet touch the floor. Take a walk or stretch break every hour.

High heels also threaten good posture. When wearing high heels, draw in your abdominal muscles to prevent an extra curve in your low back. Ideally, you should try to limit use of high heels, Kakuk said. And when you do wear them, choose heels that are smaller and have a wider surface area, which will help distribute your foot and weight better.

Kakuk said maintaining good posture can help you walk, sit, stand and lie in positions that cause the least stress on your muscles and ligaments.

(HealthDayNews) -- Golf is often touted as a good way to get some exercise, enjoy a beautifiul summer day and have some fun. But, as with any sport, players need to be careful to avoid injury.

The American Chiropractic Assocation offers a few suggestions to help golfers keep their backs pain free: make sure the clubs you use are the right size; take lessons to ensure you have a proper swing; and pull, rather than carry that heavy bag.

Finally, the group warns that even riding in a cart can cause you pain from the bouncing. Instead, alternate walking and riding between holes.

Back Care for Travelers - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

            Back Care for Travelers

Stretch regularly when you travel long distances

And "More information" links may no longer work. Questions about personal health should always be referred to a physician or other health care professional.

(HealthDayNews) -- Long hours of travel, whether by car or plane, can be brutal on your back.

The Canadian Chiropractic Association suggests some ways to prevent and relieve the physical stress of traveling:

            If you're in a car:
Stop every hour or so, get out of the car and stretch. Work your arms, ankles, and torso, and take a short walk.
If you can't stop, stretch in your seat. Tighten your calf muscles, hold for three counts, and release. Do the same for your thigh muscles. Roll your shoulders backward and forward a few times. Keep a loose grip on the steering wheel. Clenching it too tightly will tire your hands, wrists and arms.

            If you're in a plane:
Every now and then, get out of your seat and walk down the aisle.
While sitting, tense and release the muscles in your legs and buttocks. Roll your shoulders backward and forward, and wiggle your fingers and toes.
When you put your luggage in the overhead bin, stand out in the aisle so you don't have to twist your back to get the bag over your head and into the compartment.
