Watermelon Juice Soothes Post-Exercise Muscle Soreness - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Watermelon Juice Soothes Post-Exercise Muscle Soreness
Author: Marissa Luck
Stock up on your favorite summer fruit while you’ll can: a new studyfound that watermelon juice can naturally alleviate muscle soreness after exercise.
Watermelon juice has previously been found to have antioxidant properties which may boost muscle protein and aide in athletic performance. The key to its effects lie in an amino acid known as L-citrulline.
Researchers publishing in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistrysought to test the effects of watermelon juice on a group of healthy volunteers. They wondered whether watermelon juice enriched with extra L-citrulline could be more beneficial than natural watermelon juice or control beverage. The volunteers drank one of the three beverages before exercise, and were tested for heart rate and muscles soreness 24 hours after their work out.
Both forms of watermelon juice, enriched and un-enriched, reduced muscle compared to the control beverage. The un-enriched, un-pasteurized juice actually appeared to be more bioavailable than the enriched juice, meaning it was easier for the body to access the amino acid L-citrulline.
Drinking watermelon juice is just one way to naturally prevent and relieve muscle soreness. Massage therapy was also found to assist the body in cell regeneration and recovery after vigorous exercise in one study. Pain medications, while they can relieve symptoms, may actually suppress the body’s natural response to inflammation, which can prolong the pain of a difficult workout. A study last year showed that people who took an anti-inflammatory painkillers after vigorous exercise actually experienced longer periods of soreness compared to people who went drug-free.
Athletes looking for effective recovery after a workout may find better relief with non-drug options like massage therapy, chiropractic, and improved nutrition.

Chiropractic Could Be the “Hidden Cure” You Need For Your Migraine - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Chiropractic Could Be the “Hidden Cure” You Need For Your Migraine
Author: Christina DeBuskThe cause of migraines is still somewhat a mystery. Scientists have found a number of neurological and even genetic factors at play in regard to these often life-altering headaches, but haven’t yet identified a primary cause. Unfortunately, since the research is constantly changing, this essentially forces patients to accept treatments that temporarily ease their pain, but don’t offer any long-term solutions.
However, the first step to preventing migraines is discovering the triggers that bring them on. And beyond wine, stress, and chocolate, there’s an extremely common migraine trigger that may just surprise you. It involves tiny knots of muscles in your neck, called myofascial trigger points.
In a study published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, researchers found that migraine sufferers had increased muscle stiffness and myofascial trigger points in their right sternocleidomastoid and right trapezius neck muscles when compared to headache-free patients.
Myofascial trigger points create a “cycle of pain” in which your migraine headache causes you tense your neck muscles, which leads to knots, which further forces you to constrict your muscles, leading to even more headaches. How can you break this cycle? Through regular spinal manipulations, a chiropractor may be able to provide you migraine relief, if not take your head pain away entirely.
For instance, a recent case study involved a 15-year old male who had a migraine for over a month, along with suffering from a whole other host of issues such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Tourette syndrome. He engaged in chiropractic care over the course of 19 weeks and, not only did his migraine go away, but his other conditions improved as well.
Beyond this case study, studies involving larger sample sizes show that patients with migraine can expect to experience a 68-90 percent decrease in headache severity by using chiropractic care.
If you suffer from migraines, make an appointment with your chiropractor today. It may be just the treatment you need to become pain-free!

Stress hormones eased with chiropractic adjustments - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Stress hormones eased with chiropractic adjustments
Author: Megan ChurchwellFor many years, it has been known that chiropractic adjustments can treat a variety of conditions. Now, evidence is mounting that chiropractic care can also improve overall health. Recent studies have shown chiropractic treatments can improve immune response, reduce blood pressure, and affect heart rate.
In 2011, Japanese researchers found evidence that chiropractic adjustments directly influences the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system, part of the central nervous system, controls automatic body functions such as blood pressure, digestion, immunity, and heart rate.
The study involved 12 men with neck pain who were given chiropractic adjustments. The researchers performed PET scans both before and after the treatment in order to track brain activity. The scans provided evidence of altered brain activity in the areas responsible for stress reactions and pain processing. The researchers also measured significantly lower levels of salivary cortisol, a stress hormone.
The research shows that chiropractic treatments have a positive influence on the central nervous system, resulting in pain reduction. It is also shows that chiropractic care can enhance the body’s stress response, boosting immunity and helping to improve overall health. It is clear that chiropractic adjustments can promote wellness, not just relief of pain symptoms.

Exercise After Whiplash: Don’t Do It Alone - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Exercise After Whiplash: Don’t Do It Alone
Author: Marissa Luck Countless studies have pointed to the benefits of exercise for recovering from spinal injuries like whiplash. But is staying physically active enough to combat minor auto injuries? A new study sought to answer that question by comparing general exercise to therapist-led interventions for whiplash.
The study included 216 patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders. Participants were randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments: physiotherapist-led neck exercises; behavioral interventions plus physiotherapist-led neck exercises; or a generalized exercise program.
Researchers discovered that specific neck exercises led by a trained therapist increased patients’ odds of recovery. After six months, 39-44% of patients in the specific exercise groups had a significant reduction in pain, compared to 28% in the generalized exercise group. Adding a behavioral intervention to the neck exercises did not appear to make a significant difference in this study.
What this means is that auto injury patients do indeed benefit from the skills of a medical professional trained in exercise treatments, such as a physiotherapist or a chiropractor. Doctors of chiropractic can also use spinal manipulation to enhance exercise therapies. The study also demonstrates that even patients with chronic pain can improve with targeted interventions. Contact a chiropractor to discover how these non-invasive therapies can expedite rehabilitation after an auto accident.

What Can I Expect on My First Visit to a Chiropractor - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
What Can I Expect on My First Visit to a Chiropractor - Doctor of Chiropractic?
The first thing a chiropractor will do is ask you about the health complaints about which you are chiefly concerned. The DC will also ask about your family history, dietary habits, other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.), your job, and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your illness and the best treatment.
Medical records, such as diagnostic test results, or imaging results, such as X-rays and MRIs, will also provide important information about your condition.
Certain things in your health history are particularly vital to a chiropractor. This information could provide important clues that will allow your chiropractor to properly diagnose your problem. Such clues include whether you have or have had:
- Bone disorders such as osteoporosis;
- Circulatory problems (for example, poor circulation could be a sign that you have a subluxation);
- Dizziness or blurred vision;
- Heart conditions such as hypertension or high blood pressure;
- Infections, especially those affecting your spine;
- Injuries, such as bone fractures, muscle sprains, or disc injuries;
- Joint disorders such as arthritis; or
- Sleep apnea.
Be prepared to answer such questions as:
Did the onset of your pain immediately follow an injury? Is there anything you do that improves or worsens the pain? When and how did your pain start? Where is the pain centered?
The physical exam
Here's what to expect:
The first order of business is checking your vital signs, reflexes, and blood pressure. Sometimes, measurements will be taken to determine arm and leg length.
Next, you will be asked to do a series of simple and easy activities or exercises. These exercises will provide information about your motor skills, balance and gait, among others. These tests also help determine your range of motion, muscle tone and strength, and integrity of your nervous system. Any abnormalities could provide clues about a condition. You may be asked to:
- Bend forward, sideways, or backwards - Misaligned spinal vertebrae can sometimes be detected during this exercise. Flex and extend your leg - This is a test for signs of sprain and helps determine the integrity of your joints (also called the "Yeoman's Test").
- Grip something such as a rubber ball - Your grip strength is vital for showing signs of muscular or nerve damage.
- Lie down and raise one leg - This is often referred to as the "Thomas Test," in which the chiropractor gently pushes on your raised leg to check for hip joint mobility.
- Stand and raise one leg - This test can sometimes show whether you have sciatica, a nerve disorder in your lower back. Another test may involve pushing on your raised leg to determine whether you have pain, inflammation, or imbalance in the joints between your spinal vertebrae. (This is also called the "Psoas Muscle Test.")
- Stand or sit - Posture can sometimes show whether you have misalignments in your spine.
- Walk a straight line - This test measures your gait, and helps to determine if you have a normal walking pattern.
- Walk in Place - Abnormalities in the way your pelvis and spine coordinate can be seen during this test.
Next, a short physical exam by the chiropractor will involve palpation, or use of the hands, to explore the alignment of your spine and other structures, as well as provide information on any stimuli that may cause pain. Depending on your condition, a series of diagnostic tests may follow. These tests may include MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, blood work, and other laboratory tests.
The chiropractor may also consult with you about making important lifestyle changes, such as exercise, nutrition, and smoking cessation, to improve your chances of healing faster, or preventing further injury.
Adjustments
An "adjustment," as doctors of chiropractic use the term, means the specific manipulation of vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. Doctors of chiropractic spend years learning motion palpation (the art of examining by movement or touch) and other forms of spinal examining procedures, so that they can administer specific and appropriate spinal adjustments.
Once the DC has identified the problem, he/she will begin care by way of these adjustments or "manipulations." Particular attention will be paid to that area of your spine where a spinal derangement or "subluxation" has been detected. The adjustment is usually given by hand or "activator" type instruments, and consists of applying pressure to the areas of the spine that are out of alignment or that do not move properly within their normal range of motion.
Doctors of chiropractic use many sophisticated and varied techniques, and the specific procedure to be used will be determined and explained completely to you following a careful evaluation of your radiographs and physical findings.
Under normal circumstances, adjustments don't hurt. The patient may experience a minor amount of discomfort during the adjustment, which lasts only seconds. Adjustments or manipulations are extremely safe. The risk factor is estimated to be in excess of 1 million to 1.

Relieving Back Pain during Pregnancy - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Relieving Back Pain during Pregnancy
Ah, the indescribable joys of pregnancy. The anticipation of new life, the intimate, developing bond between mother and child ... and the back pain. More than 50% of women experience back pain during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, and frequently the pain can be excruciating and debilitating.
A Swedish study involving 258 pregnant women investigated whether water gymnastics could reduce the intensity of back pain and the number of days taken for sick leave. Women were divided equally into two groups: an exercise group that participated in water gymnastics (one hour of relaxation exercises, performed in a swimming pool and accompanied by music) during the second half of their pregnancy; and a control group that did not participate in water gymnastics.
Although back pain intensity increased during the course of pregnancy for both groups, the exercise group reported less pain compared with the control group. The total number of reported days on sick leave was also lower in the exercise group (982 days taken) compared with controls (1,484 days taken).
Many of the joys and frustrations of parenthood will last much longer than nine months, so prepare yourself. But back pain is one frustration that doesn't have to last. If you¹re expecting a child and are experiencing back pain, talk to your doctor of chiropractic about making your pregnancy as pain-free as possible.

Arthritis Patients Choose Chiropractic - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Arthritis Patients Choose Chiropractic
In 1997, Americans made an estimated 629 million visits to practitioners of "complementary and alternative medicine" (CAM), compared with just 388 million visits to primary care physicians that same year.
A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that many arthritis patients used CAM, and that chiropractic was the most frequently used type of care.
Even more significantly, chiropractic was also near the top of the list in terms of the number of patients who regularly used CAM, and the number of patients who found CAM helpful for their condition.
Don't let arthritis get the best of you. If you or someone you know suffers from the daily pain and frustration of arthritis, schedule an appointment with a doctor of chiropractic.

Leg pain can be sign of a dangerous heart condition - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Leg pain can be sign of a dangerous heart condition
Author: Megan Churchwell
In the United States, almost 30 million people have peripheral arterial disease, or PAD, though the vast majority do not realize that they have this dangerous condition.
Most people assume that clogged arteries only happen in the heart. But in fact, this condition can occur anywhere in the body. In some people, this blood vessel blockage, which interferes with the flow of blood to the extremities, leads to leg pain. Such pain serves as an early warning of high risk for strokes and heart attacks, as people with PAD have a much higher risk of these serious, life-threatening health problems.
People who are over 50, are overweight, or have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes have the highest risk for PAD. Factors such as smoking and a diet high in fat can cause cholesterol, scar tissue, and blood clots that block the arteries going to the legs. If you have unexplained pain in your legs, especially if it lasts more than a week, talk to your doctor. Your doctor may perform an ultrasound test to check for arterial blockage, which indicates PAD.
To prevent PAD or keep it from becoming more serious, quit smoking, follow a healthy diet, exercise, and get your cholesterol and blood pressure levels checked. Your doctor may also advise you to take a daily aspirin or other drugs to prevent clots or reduce your cholesterol and blood pressure. In severe cases, procedures such as angioplasty or bypass surgery may be required.
Leg pain can also be a sign of sciatica which can be treated naturally with chiropractic and exercise.

Massage Therapy for Neck and Shoulder Pain - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Massage Therapy for Neck and Shoulder Pain
Author: Marissa Luck
Massage therapy is beneficial for shoulder and neck pain, but is no more effective than other active, conservative treatments, according to a new study.
Massage therapy has long been one of the most popular alternative treatments, with ancient references to massage dating back to 2700 BC in China. Despite its popularity, few studies have examined the efficacy of massage therapy alone for neck and shoulder pain. Many studies on massage therapy (MT) included it as an adjunctive therapy in preparation for mobilization, spinal manipulation or other treatments, making it difficulty to evaluate the efficacy on its own. This has lead earlier literature reviews to suggest that there is inconclusive evidence on the MT for neck and shoulder pain.
Those literature are mostly out of date however, according to Ling Jun Kong of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ling and colleagues conducted an updated literature review of twelve studies on the efficacy of MT for neck and shoulder pain. The data included 757 participants from eight countries who were treated with a variety of massage therapies including traditional Thai, Chinese, and Western approaches.
When compared to inactive treatments (wait lists, standard care, or sham), massage led to significantly better outcomes in the short term for patients with neck and shoulder pain. In one study, MT patient were more than twice as likely to experience significant improvements in neck pain compared to standard-care patients ( 39% versus 14%). Although patients’ pain dissipated after receiving massage, their functional status (measured by shoulder range of motion) stayed the same. Whether this would change over time is unclear, since the researchers found that there was still insufficient evident to asses the long-term effects of MT for shoulder and neck pain.
Additionally, MT was found to be more no more effective than other active treatments like acupuncture, traction, physical therapy, exercise, and activator trigger point therapy. It’s possible that massage may be the most effective when combined with other active treatments like chiropractic care, however more research is needed.
Ling and colleagues concluded that massage produced meaningful short-term benefits for patients with neck and shoulder pain. They suggested that massage therapy may trigger biochemical changes that affect blood circulation, improve muscle flexibility, and loosen adherent connective tissue. These biochemical changes could play a role in mediating the body’s response to pain and inflammation. For instance, earlier studies have suggested that massage is better than anti-inflammatory drugs for improving inflammation and recovery after intense exercise.

Chiropractic Patients Have Better Knees - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Chiropractic Patients Have Better Knees
Author: Marissa Luck
Chiropractic care and massage therapy was tied to better knee function in patients with knee osteoarthritis in a recent study.
The prevalence of arthritis is growing by nearly 1 million every year, according to a CDC report. An increasingly obese and arthritic population has also contributed to a rise in total knee replacement surgeries in younger patients. These younger patients may require new knee replacements within 5-10 years of their original surgery with more complications arising with each additional operation due to bone loss. Fortunately, there are non-invasive options for knee osteoarthritis that do not involve the risks and costs of surgery.
A recent study, published in the journal Clinical Therapeutics, found that patients who received either massage therapy or chiropractic care had better knee function compared to patients not seeing a chiropractor or massage therapist.
The study included an analysis of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use in 1,121 adults with knee osteoarthritis. Researchers found:
Almost one third of older adults used CAM therapies
People with more stiffness and severe knee pain were more likely to seek CAM therapies
Adults over the age of 75 were more likely use dietary supplements than adults between the ages of 65-75 years
18% used glucosamine and chondroitin in addition to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
These findings add to earlier research showing the benefits of non-invasive treatments for osteoarthritis. A 2008 study demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments improved mobility and decreased clicking and grinding sensations among people with knee osteoarthritis. Another study published last year showed that regular exercise plus physical therapy was as effective as surgery for knee OA. The benefits of exercise and chiropractic also extend to patients with hip osteoarthritis.

89% of Office Workers Have Musculoskeletal Pain - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
89% of Office Workers Have Musculoskeletal Pain
Author: Marissa Luck
If you spend your days in an office, you’re probably familiar with the aches and pain that come with long hours of computer work. A new study showed that up to 89% of office workers suffer from some sort of musculoskeletal pain; whether that be in the neck, back, shoulders, wrists, or knees.
Although this pain can start as a dull ache at work, if left unaddressed, it may develop into a repetitive motion injury or other serious disorder. Seeking early treatment can reduce your risk for developing these conditions. Studies suggest that chiropractic care can relieve and prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, and neck disorders associated with working.
Work-related Pain Study
To estimate the prevalence of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions in office workers, researchers surveyed 91 employees who worked at a university office setting. The employees rated their pain and responded to questionnaires on job satisfaction and health.
Neck pain was the most common complaint, affecting 69.2% of workers. Lower back pain was the second most common (58.2%), followed by knee problems (41.8%), shoulder concerns (35.2%) and pain in the upper back (34%). People with MSK complaints were also more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs. Wrist, shoulder, and low-back pain were most the significant predictors of poor job satisfaction.
Other recent research has shown that stressed, over-worked employees have an increased likelihood of suffering from back pain, headache, and shoulder problems.Stress of course isn’t the only thing causing musculoskeletal pain. Poor posture, unhealthy work stations, and previous musculoskeletal injuries can exacerbate the risks associated with repetitive motions or long hours hunching over a computer.
Doctors of chiropractic can create treatment plans that address the multifaceted nature of work-related pain. Not only do chiropractors work to correct dysfunctions in the joints and spine, they’ll also help you identify appropriate preventive measures through posture correction, ergonomic training, and exercise therapy. Some studies suggests that chiropractic adjustments may also improve your body’s response to inflammation and stress, providing you with protective benefits against further MSK injuries.

Avocado: Good for Your Waistline and Your Joints - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Avocado: Good for Your Waistline and Your Joints
Author: Marissa LuckNew research suggests that not only is avocado tasty, it may help to trim your waistline and aide in arthritis management. In a new study, researchers found patients with arthritis who used supplements of avocado and soybean oil had reduced joint space narrowing. Another study found that eating an avocado at lunch may help you manage your weight.
Previous research has already shown that the fruit is beneficial for reducing the risk of certain cancers, weight management, and lowering BMI. In a recent study published in the Nutrition Journal, researchers asked overweight adults to add avocado to their standard lunches and track how quickly they became hungry after the meal.
Compared to standard lunch eaters, people who ate avocados with lunch reported feeling 26% more satisfied. They had a 40% decreased desire to eat within the three hours after lunch, and a 28% decreased desire to eat within five hours after lunch. Although the addition of avocado increased caloric and carbohydrate intake, the participants didn’t experience an increase in blood sugar levels. The study authors suggested the fruit could help with managing both diabetes and weight loss.
More concentrated amounts of avocado, taken in a pill form combined with soybean oil, could also assist in managing hip arthritis, according to preliminary research from the Annals of Rheumatic Disease. Patients who used avocado-soybean oil supplements had a 20% reduced rate of joint space narrowing after four years compared to a control group.
The patients who used the supplements did not experience a reduction in pain, disease severity, or use of pain medications however. Still, the differences seen in joint space narrowing were clinically significant. Researchers plan on testing these results further by analyzing the effects of the supplements on total hip replacement surgery rates.

Are iPads Making Teens’ Bones Weaker? - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Are iPads Making Teens’ Bones Weaker?
Author: Marissa Luck
Parents often bemoan the amount of time teenagers spend surfing the web or playing video games, and a new study could add fodder to their worries. The study suggests that increased screen time is tied to significantly lower bone mineral density in boys. Screen time includes any sedentary time spent in front of a computer, tablet, TV, or other electronic device. Since adolescence is a pivotal time for bone development, poor BMD could mean more fractures and an increased risk of osteoporosis.
Researchers from Norway analyzed data from 463 girls and 484 boys between the ages of 15-18 years. BMD was measured using a dual-energy Z-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The teens also reported on screen time use and physical activity levels.
Overall the boys who logged the most hours of screen time had the highest body mass index (BMD) and lowest BMD. In general, boys spent more time in front of screens than girls.
“The findings for boys on the other hand clearly show that sedentary lifestyle during adolescence can impact on BMD and thus compromise the acquisition of peak bone mass,” said lead author, Dr. Anne Winther, of the Artic University of Norway, as reported by Medical Xpress and Counsel & Heal.
Despite the clear link in boys, the girls who spent more time in front a screen actually had better BMD than girls with less screen time. Dr. Winther said the finding warrants additional research. The results were presented at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Musculoskeletal Diseases.
Additional screen time has been tied to a higher risk of back pain in teenagers, and more sedentary time is generally an indicator of a poorer quality of life, according to one study. Chiropractors can assist your child in making healthy lifestyle choices to decrease their chance of injury and musculoskeletal pain.

Good Posture: A Stance for Better Health - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Good Posture: A Stance for Better Health
Straighten up with these expert tips
Please note: This article was published more than one year ago. The facts and conclusions presented may have since changed and may no longer be accurate. And "More information" links may no longer work. Questions about personal health should always be referred to a physician or other health care professional.

SATURDAY, Sept. 26, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Healthy posture is important for your well-being, but achieving it can be an uphill battle in a high-tech, high-heeled world, experts say.
"People who have better posture tend to appear more confident and knowledgeable to others. It makes them feel confident internally as well," said Alynn Kakuk, a physical therapist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program in Rochester, Minn.
Simple exercises and stretching can help your posture, she said.
One way to practice healthy posture is to stand with your upper back, shoulders and bottom touching the wall, with your feet a couple of inches away from the wall, she said in a Mayo news release.
There should be a slight space between your lower back and the wall, just large enough to fit your hands. Then, step away from the wall and try to see if you can maintain that posture.
It's also important to remember that strengthening your muscles will make it easier for you to maintain that healthy posture, Kakuk noted.
Frequent use of cellphones and keyboards can sabotage posture and place stress on the upper back and neck, leading to rounded shoulders and a lowered head. Try to keep your cellphone at eye level so that you're not bending forward, she suggested. Also, do exercises that strengthen your upper back and shoulders, such as chest exercises that strengthen your pectoral muscles and diaphragm-centered breathing techniques that release tension, she added.
Her other advice? Place your keyboard at elbow height, so your hands can rest on the desk. Position computer screens and laptops at eye level. Set your chair so that your feet touch the floor. Take a walk or stretch break every hour.
High heels also threaten good posture. When wearing high heels, draw in your abdominal muscles to prevent an extra curve in your low back. Ideally, you should try to limit use of high heels, Kakuk said. And when you do wear them, choose heels that are smaller and have a wider surface area, which will help distribute your foot and weight better.
Kakuk said maintaining good posture can help you walk, sit, stand and lie in positions that cause the least stress on your muscles and ligaments.

Alcohol and the Risk of Back Pain - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Alcohol and the Risk of Back Pain
Author: Marissa Luck
Does regularly drinking alcohol increase your risk of back pain? Earlier research has shown that people who smoke are more likely to suffer from back pain and musculoskeletal conditions. Quitting smoking may even lead to an improvement in symptoms for patients with spinal pain. But can patients experience the same pain-alleviating effects by altering their alcohol consumption?
To answer that question, researchers from the University of Sydney performed a meta-analysis of 26 studies on the relationship between back pain and alcohol consumption.
Nine of the cross-sectional studies showed a slight association between alcohol intake and low-back pain. However, this link was less strong after controlling for alcohol abuse and dependence. Additionally the remaining studies did not tend to show a significant correlation between drinking and back pain.About a third of the studies also looked at whether how often people drank affected their risk of back pain, but no substantial relationship was established.
“Alcohol consumption appears to be associated with complex and chronic LBP only in people with alcohol consumption dependence,” the researchers concluded. “Clinicians in the musculoskeletal field could use this information to design educational strategies for this population.”
It’s still unclear whether modifying alcohol consumption could have a direct impact on back pain, and researchers suggested the need for additional research.
Researchers also wondered whether moderate alcohol consumption could have a protective effect on the future risk of back pain, since earlier studies have shown that moderate drinking may ease fibromyalgia and prevent cardiovascular events.

What is Chiropractic? - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is an art, a philosophy, and a science combined to diagnose and treat the patient without drugs, lotions, or potions. Chiropractors use their hands to perform gentle adjustments to re-align the spine. A chiropractor focuses on misalignments in the spinal column that press on nerves and cause pain or disease in the body. Dr. Caillouet DC successfully treats patients of all ages for many different ailments. From three day old babies to the elderly, chiropractic is safe and effective.

Anxiety: Chiropractic Treatment Options - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Anxiety: Chiropractic Treatment Options
Anxiety can be a debilitating disorder that can be detrimental to everyday life. When it comes to anxiety, the first step is learning about the different types, the possible triggers and most importantly: how to treat it.
Types of Anxiety
If you have recently not felt like yourself, and think that maybe anxiety may be the reason behind this, it’s important to educate yourself on the different types of anxiety disorders. It is also important to know if anxiety runs in your family, as this may help you decipher which type you may be suffering from.
- The different types of anxiety include:
- Panic Disorder
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Social Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety Symptoms
The symptoms of anxiety may vary greatly depending on the type of anxiety and the individual person. The most common symptoms include:
- Problems sleeping
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Cold or sweaty hands
- Uneasiness
Possible Triggers
The most important part of treatment comes from knowing what may cause or trigger the early onset of an anxiety attack. The first step in recognizing these is by keeping a journal of possible activities or events happening leading up to the anxiety or panic attack. This can be used when discussing treatment options with your doctor.
There are two main factors that affect this type of disorder: physical and psychological. Some examples of some possible factors are:
- Food allergies
- Sugar
- Caffeine
- Alcohol
- Deficiencies of calcium, magnesium or B vitamins
Chiropractic Care
There are a variety of treatment options available for those suffering from anxiety. These treatment options can include: medication, psychotherapy (counseling), and lifestyle changes which may include changing what you eat to help avoid anxiety attacks. Another form of care that can be considered is chiropractic care.
What can chiropractic care offer someone who suffers from anxiety? There are a combination of treatments that are involved with chiropractic care, involving manipulation, and a change in diet.
Chiropractic manipulation may help with increasing brain activity and also help with the balance of the nervous system. It is also important for those that are seeking chiropractic care to be tested for any possible food allergies. Chiropractic care works best when there is a consistent outside care being made to the body, which includes a healthier lifestyle (excluding alcohol and caffeine) and seeking treatment with your current doctor.

ADHD and Migraine Improve with Chiropractic - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Case Study: ADHD and Migraine Improve with Chiropractic
Author: Christina DeBuskChildren who suffer with migraines have it tough. Not only do they have to find a way to deal with the throbbing pain coming from their head, but they may also experience behavioral or learning difficulties too. This can put them behind in school and in trouble at home, neither of which is a good place for a child to be.
Some researchers are finding that kids with migraines are being prescribed narcotics at an alarming rate, putting them at-risk of painkiller addictions and other adverse side effects associated with the drugs. For parents interested in a non-pharmaceutical method of managing migraines, one recent case study suggests that chiropractic care may not only resolve head pain, it could have a positive impact on learning and behavior in kids.
A Case Study
An adolescent male who was 15 years of age had a migraine headache for over a month. In addition to the consistent and recurrent head pain he was experiencing, he had also been diagnosed with three separate behavioral conditions, namely attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Tourette syndrome (TS), more than 10 years before.
Testing showed that even though the subject was in ninth grade, he scored between fourth and eighth grade levels. He also exhibited factors that confirmed his previous diagnoses for ADHD as he scored extremely high on that scale.
As a course of treatment, he engaged in regular spinal manipulations (42 in total) that involved realignment of the entire length of his spine. He also did exercises that were meant to assist with his treatment, all of which happened over the course of 19 weeks. The results?
Physically, he no longer had his migraine, his TS tics happened less often, and he even required new glasses because his vision had improved. Mentally, he experienced a 90% gain in his ability to be attentive and he was able to stay awake long enough to study, whereas he previously fell asleep when trying to learn.
This study confirms the benefits of chiropractic care on children who suffer from reoccurring headaches, as well as from behavioral and learning issues. That makes this drug-free treatment option a win-win for children and parents alike.

Surprising Number of Preteens Have Chronic Headache - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul
Surprising Number of Preteens Have Chronic Headache
Author: Marissa Luck
Preteens may experience headaches and neck pain far more often than their parents would expect. A Swedish study of 131 students ages 10-13 years old compared the spinal health of students with and without pain. A surprising finding was that parents significantly underreported their child’s experience of pain.
The study found a wide discrepancy between what the children and parents reported regarding the child’s health. Children rated their experience and frequency of pain on surveys, prior to the assessment. Parents were asked separately to answer the same questions on behalf of their children.
Nearly a third of of children reported that they “often” had neck pain and/or headaches yet only 6% of parents thought their kids frequently had headache. Similarly, 61% of children reported trauma to the head and/or neck region but only 20% of the parents said that their children had experienced such trauma.
Overall, 40% of students ages 10-13 reported some type of neck pain or headache. Long periods of reading or using the computer tended to make headache worse.
To address the prevalence of headaches, chiropractors can:
Educate adult patients about the high levels of neck pain and headaches among youth
Encourage parents to talk with their children about neck pain and/or headaches and its origins
Teach families techniques to prevent headaches following computer or reading time
Chiropractors who continue to educate themselves on the latest findings and techniques in pediatric chiropractic are best equipped to protect the development of children’s spines.
