10 Reasons to Consider Chiropractic Therapy - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

10 Reasons You Should Consider Chiropractic Therapy

By Dr. David Jockers DC, MS, CSCS

One of the most sought after forms of alternative healing is chiropractic care. Amongst cancer survivors who seek chiropractic therapy, 84% do so to alleviate pain, improve mood and sleeping habits, as well as to relieve stress.

The purpose of chiropractic treatment is not only to relieve pain, but to improve quality of life by alleviating systemic problems relating to muscles and the central nervous system. Given the researched benefits of chiropractic care, it is likely that you or someone you know could benefit from this alternative therapy.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 reasons you might benefit from chiropractic care.

1. Elevates Sports Performance

Both athletes and non-athletes can benefit from sports-specific chiropractors. These specialized doctors have a focus on manipulating joints, soft tissue, and the spine to improve recovery time and prevent injury of strains, sprains, and even concussions.

Chiropractors can teach you how to focus on the proper techniques for the sport you play. This will include stretching techniques which can reduce the occurrence of an injury, the severity of an injury, and a recommended rehabilitation time frame for healing.

2. Reduces Headaches

Do you have frequent headaches? Do you find that headaches dramatically impact your health and ability to maintain the lifestyle you want? Neck pressure and movement can exacerbate the severity of headaches caused by abnormal head positioning such as hunching over at a computer during the work day.

Chiropractic therapy can remove obstructing structures causing the tightness in the back and strain on the spine. Receiving chiropractic care is an effective way to limit the occurrence of headaches, and lessen the intensity when they do occur.

3. Stimulates the Immune System

The immune system interacts directly with the nervous system affecting overall health. Again, obstructions with the signaling pathways between the nervous and the immune system impact the ability to heal adequately.

Without the use of surgery or medication, chiropractic care removes these barriers so that the body can properly repair itself at a genetic level and stimulate the immune system fully.

4. Wellness and Prevention

Chiropractic procedures manipulate the spine and entail a variety of procedures which treat underlying health problems. For instance, decompression exercises improve sleeping habits and have no known side effects.

Gastrointestinal Issues: Gut complaints are some of the most commonly reported problems which affect all ages in today’s society and are due to systemic concerns. Colic, persistent constipation, heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be detected in infants to older adults and have likely affected you some time in your life. Irritable bowel syndrome is the most widespread condition worldwide.

Cancer: Education teaches all, especially cancer patients, how to improve wellness and prevent future occurrences or a secondary cancer. Chiropractic therapy focuses on some of the first common symptoms of cancer: musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction as well as chronic headaches.

In fact, 70% of advanced cancer patients, including those with cancer of the lungs, thyroid, breasts, kidney, and prostate have metastasized cancer in the skeletal system. Chiropractic treatment has also been shown to improve healing in cancer patients, as opposed to medication and other conventional therapies.

5. Alleviates Allergies and Asthma

Both chiropractors and parents of children suffering from allergies such as asthma support the positive results of chiropractic treatment.

Studies also support that chiropractic therapy benefits patients by decreasing the amount of medication needed. They suffer fewer asthma attacks and report an overall lessening of symptoms leading to an improved quality of life.

6. Pregnancy

Throughout pregnancy, many women experience chronic back pain due to the changing weight distribution on the pelvis and joints. Pain and muscle spasms may increase the likelihood that a pregnant mother will struggle during labor and delivery.

Chiropractic treatment focuses on balancing the muscles, pelvis, and ligaments during pregnancy to relieve pressure on the uterus. This treatment increases the likelihood that the child will be born via a preferable position while lowering the risk of being born through cesarean section.

Seventy-two percent of women report finding relief from pain during pregnancy and labor resulting from chiropractic care. Part of this success may due to the fact that women are encouraged and shown how to follow a proper exercise routine for pregnancy. This reduces weight gain, improves hormones, and allows for a more comfortable rest during sleep.

7. Mitigates Chronic Pain

Low back pain affects more than 10% of the population globally, and is the most common occupational injury in the United States and Canada. North America ranks low back pain sixth amongst contributing factors for increased medical cost. Compared to conventional health management practices, chiropractic care is low cost and improves the healing of the entire body.

Doctors of chiropractic also focus on education, which is critical to reducing injuries, disability, care costs, and adverse side effects. Chiropractic therapy is also a patient preference for providing pain relief.

8. Manages Behavioral and Learning Disabilities

Chiropractic procedures improve wellness and can help reduce hyperactivity and disruptive behaviors linked to ADHD and learning disabilities associated with autism.

Evidence supports that chiropractic treatment can better able a child to concentrate. In turn, it improves learning and behavior by limiting causes of agitation.

9. Weakens Dependence on Medication and Medical Interventions

There has been a 65% increase in patients seeking spinal treatment over an 8 year period, contributing to a significant rise in healthcare costs. However, approximately 96% of people with low back pain can find relief without surgery. This could lead to a remarkable lowering of costs.

Chronic pain is on the rise. The first line of treatment most individuals turn to for pain relief involves medication. Tens of thousands of people consuming drugs like acetaminophen and oxycodone have reported injuries and deaths directly resulting from drug use. Drugs have adverse side effects unlike chiropractic care.

Young adults are especially susceptible to drug overdoses. Dr. Joseph Wiley, Chief of Pediatrics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, is quoted as saying “If you extrapolate from an adult dose to a pediatric dose, you may be right…you may be wrong.”

10. Normalizes Blood Pressure

Hypertension affects around 33% of Americans. Most of these individuals will use medication to manage the condition. Chiropractic care can significantly control blood pressure. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to result in a decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.

In fact, tests show that chiropractic care works as effectively at managing hypertension as do two of the most commonly prescribed medications. Chiropractors focus on the bone at the top of the neck in proximity to the brain stem which may be the reason for the impact on regulating blood pressure.

Sports Chiropractors Prevent Injury in Runners - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

How Sports Chiropractors Prevent Injury in Runners

By Sabrina Grotewold

If you think chiropractors simply "crack" backs, you're not alone. Scott Duke, D.C., owner of Duke Chiropractic in New York City, is accustomed to hearing this misconception.

"Sports chiropractors who are trained in muscle work, such as Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston, are probably the best manual therapists for preventing injury and optimizing performance," says Duke. "That's why there's always a sports chiropractor on Olympic and professional sports teams."

For runners, chiropractic can be used for injury prevention because it emphasizes proper alignment of the spine and pelvis. The most common running-related injuries Duke sees in his patients, which range from recreational runners to Olympians and New York City Marathon winners, are plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, IT Band Syndrome, patella (knee) tracking problems and hip bursitis.

Duke's first step in treating these injuries: Search for misalignment.

"Malalignment of the spine can cause unnecessary tension on one particular body part versus an equal distribution of pressure," he says. "I can't take care of anyone's chronic IT band problem without making sure their pelvis is in as perfect alignment as it can be. Otherwise, it'll continue to wear, tear, and put strain on that one particular body part."

What Causes Improper Alignment?

Major causes of improper alignment include running in the same direction on the same course every day; running often slanted surfaces, such as a beach; and not replacing shoes every few hundred miles.

Fix these training errors that cause misalignment with a few simple tweaks:
  • Vary your running surface—pavement, track, asphalt, grass, dirt, wood chips—a few times a week, and you'll naturally run on different courses.
  • Run as close to the water as possible when on the beach, as the sand tends to be more flat there.
  • Buy two of the same type of running shoes, and switch between the pairs.

"There's a lot that contributes to improper spine or pelvic alignment, and sometimes it has nothing to do with running," says Duke. "It has to do with a day job, where you sit in one particular position all day and then go for a run. The muscles are in a state of tightness on one side and are lengthened on the other, and then you go for a run and your pelvis shifts."

Switch positions and seats, if possible, every 30 minutes during the day. Varied posture remains the best posture, according to Duke, so cross your left leg, then a half-hour later, cross your right leg; sit on top of your ankle, sit straight, and even slouch.

Try sitting on a stability ball—it challenges your abdominal muscles and allows you to rock your pelvis, which lubricates your joints. Switch between a chair and stability ball, stand, and take short walk breaks if you work in an office. "One position for various amounts of time is disastrous for the spine," says Duke.

Whether you run in the morning soon after rising, or in the afternoon/evening after sitting all day at work, a proper warm-up also helps prevent injury.

Warm-up and Stretches to Prevent Injury

After years and years of treating patients for the majority of the same injuries, and recognizing patterns such as not warming up and/or stretching properly, Duke developed an app, called W.E. Run, that demonstrates warm-up and stretching exercises.

"You need to warm up the hip in circular patterns, and you need to warm up the spine in rotary movements," says Duke. "You need to wake up the outer buttock muscles, called the glute medius, in order to keep your pelvis stable when you go for a run. Those are the essentials."

The best injury-preventing warm-up for runners includes exercises that support the spine, get you locomotive, lubricate the joints, "and break up the intra-articular adhesions that get stuck in the joint and prevent it from fluid mobility," says Duke. Your hip socket is a great example—you need to warm up your hips so they can move as freely as possible to respond to slips, quick changes in stride and uneven terrain.

Duke's warm-up takes two minutes to complete; do 10 or so reps of each exercise and move to the next. Start each exercise in a standing position.
  • Diagonal leg swings: Hold on to the wall or a chair for balance. Extend your left leg straight to the side and swing it from side to side in front of your body. Repeat on right leg.
  • Hip gyros: Hold on to the wall or a chair for balance. Raise the left leg and, keeping the knee bent, circle the leg inward for 10, then outward for 10. Repeat on the other leg.
  • Side lunges: Start with feet together. Lunge to the left, keeping your right leg straight and extended and your left knee bent. Let your weight shift a bit back to keep pressure off your knee. Repeat, and then complete on right leg. "This wakes up the glute medius, which helps keep your pelvis level while running," says Duke.
  • Pelvic rocks: Rock the pelvis from front to back and side to side. "This lubricates the joints of your lower back," says Duke.
  • Backstroke arm swings: Swing your straightened arms behind you in a backstroke swimming motion. "There's a slight rotation that occurs in the shoulders when running," says Duke.
  • Thoracic twists: Twist your torso to the left, twist to the right, and repeat. This movement activates your rib cage.

Move dynamically before running to prepare the body, and stretch after to ward off injury. "You never want to stretch before the run because it de-activates the muscles you want active to propel you forward," says Duke. "But it's hazardous not to stretch. Do it after you run, but it doesn't have to be immediately after—you can do it later in the day."

Stretch the following muscle groups: hamstrings, calves, quadriceps, hip flexors, quadratus lumborum ("hip hikers"), piriformis and low back, and make sure to do so every day that you run. Stretch for about 30 seconds on each side for each exercise. A complete stretching routine should take about five minutes.

Combined, the warm-up and stretches occupy seven minutes—not a lot of time compared to the hours you could spend on injury rehabilitation.

WANT TO SLEEP BETTER? Visit your Chiropractor today - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

A chiropractor says we should never sleep on our stomachs

by: Megan Willett

If you’re a stomach sleeper, chances are you're not getting the best possible night of rest.

“It’s the worst thing,” New York chiropractor Dr. Jan Lefkowitz ofBody in Balance Chiropractic told Business insider. “You should never sleep on your stomach — it creates rotation in your spine.”

Unless you rest with your head face down into the pillow, you’re probably turning your head to one side and that can put a lot of strain on your neck and cause misalignment problems, according to Dr. Lefkowitz.

“If you sleep 8 hours a night that’s a 1/3 of your day, so you’re spending a 1/3 of your life with your spine completely rotated,” he explained to us, adding that it can cause severe back and neck pain.

If you are sleeping on your stomach, the easiest way to transition is to start sleeping on your side.

Dr. Lefkowitz also recommends investing in a full length body pillow.

“That’s a really, really good way to get off your stomach because it will block you from turning onto your stomach,” he said. “Put one end between your knees from your ankle to your knee and the rest of the pillow should go to the front of your body and you can rest your top arm on it.”

This position will allow the pillow to keep you on your side and stop you if you try and roll over. Plus, for anyone who has lower back pain, having a pillow between your knees will align your hips and prevents your pelvis from rotating and collapsing.

Chiropractic care for kids - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Kids

by Nancy Clarke

Overview

An increase in chronic childhood disease is part of the reason parents today seek alternative health care for kids. Chiropractic care is an effective and affordable program by licensed providers that addresses children’s health conditions associated with the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Gentle, noninvasive and drug free, chiropractic adjustments treat, resolve and prevent a wide range of health problems. Recent research by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) found spinal manipulative therapy safe and successful in treating children of all ages.

Acute Conditions

Acute conditions may result from birth trauma, sports mishaps and accidental injury. Chiropractic care benefits children by correcting the spinal alignment to improve their overall health. When vertebral joints are misaligned during birth or from a blow or fall, muscle tissue and nerves may also be affected. Spinal adjustment frees joints, restores motion and relieves nerve pressure, which may be the cause of additional ailments. Parents report successful treatment of children’s health issues such as acute earache, upper respiratory infection, muscle pain, neck pain and accident trauma. Spinal manipulation for children as young as newborn babies is an alternative treatment for the discomfort of colic and other digestive disorders as well.

8 Ways Chiropractic Benefits Sports Performance

By: Dr. Edward Group

During its 100-year history in America, chiropractic has gained steady acceptance for easing a wide array of physical ailments. The American Chiropractic Association describes chiropractic as a form of health care that focuses on musculoskeletal and nervous systems disorders and numerous studies support their assessment. [1] Chiropractic is common in sports medicine and many trainers will encourage it before, during, and after any physical performance. Let’s take a look at a few examples of how chiropractic has benefited the sports world.

1. Solid Body Maintenance in Professional Football

It’s no secret that professional football is a beast of a game and injuries are frequent. Even if football players avoid serious injury, it’s a sure bet that stiffness and soreness are just par for the course. In a 2002 survey, thirty-one percent of football teams in the National Football League reported having a chiropractor on staff. Athletes reported using chiropractic care quite frequently, noting its effectiveness. [2]

2. Improved Mobility in College Football

Osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT, is one of the main forms of chiropractic therapy used in sports medicine. The main goal with OMT is to promote flexibility and pain-free movement. Football players often rely on OMT as a preventative measure against injuries. A 2012 Virginia Tech study showed that OMT positively impacted sports performance in both offensive and defensive Virginia Tech football players. Most football players also reported a self-assessed improvement in athletic performance after OMT sessions. [3

3. Helpful for Hockey Injuries

Like football, ice hockey is a full-contact sport and injuries are common. Chiropractic has been shown to reduce painful symptoms of recurrent shoulder instability related to hockey injuries. [4]

4. Relief for Sports Hernia

Five to twenty percent of all sports injuries involve groin pain. However, it’s not always the result of a line drive baseball. One of the most common causes of groin pain in athletes is athletic pubalgia, commonly referred to as sports hernia. [5] A study showed that soccer players who experienced sports hernia were relieved of discomfort following 8 weeks of a combination therapy that consisted of chiropractic care and rehabilitation exercises. [6]

5. Increased Strength in Martial Arts

Although mainly used for alleviating muscular and skeletal complaints, it seems thatchiropractic can also promote physical strength. [7] [8] [9] In one study, national level judo athletes showed a 16% improvement in grip strength after undergoing only three chiropractic sessions. [10]

6. Support for All Olympic Athletes

For years, chiropractors have worked with world-class Olympic athletes to improve their strength, endurance, and range of motion while training. Olympic athletes also receive chiropractic care at the games. One particular set of games often overlooked at the Olympics is the Paralympics. These games include professional athletes with some type of physical disability who also use chiropractic care to enhance performance and overcome minor injuries. [11]

7. Soothes Tennis Elbow

A whopping 50 percent of tennis players can expect to get tennis elbow during their lifetime, and one-third of tennis players will experience it in severe fashion. The main goals of chiropractic therapy for tennis elbow is to relieve discomfort and redness, promote healing, rehabilitate the injured arm, and avoid recurrence. [12]Specific joint manipulation performed by a chiropractor has shown to be effective for discomfort associated with tennis elbow.

8. Keeps Baseball Players Swinging

Baseball is a game that demands quick bursts of energy. Whether it’s running the bases or swinging the bat, these fast-moving activities often come with rotator cuff injuries, neck pain, back strains, and hamstring pulls. Studies have shown that chiropractic helps prevent hamstring and other lower limb injuries in baseball players. [13] Another study revealed that muscle strength and long jump distance was greatly improved in baseball players who received regular chiropractic adjustments. [14]

Receiving the Benefits of Chiropractic

There’s no question that chiropractic care is a fantastic method of mechanical maintenance that has repeatedly been shown to benefit the machine that is the body of an athlete (and soldiers!). Are you an athlete who incorporates chiropractic care into your health and wellness plan? Please leave a comment and share your experience of the difference chiropractic has made for you!

Back Pain and Golf: The Stats

Studies show that more than 80 percent of golfers experience back pain or injury at some point while actively playing golf.

In one study of 154 professional golfers, 55% reported a history of low back pain. This pain was of an adequate level to miss at least one tour event, or to play at an unsatisfactory level. Golfers such as Tiger Woods, Mike Weir, Vijay Singh, and David Duvall have trusted chiropractic for years to help keep them at the top of their game, and keep back pain at bay.

“Being a Chiropractic patient has really helped me immensely…lifting weights and seeing a Chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I’ve been going to Chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It’s as important to my training as practicing my swing.”?Tiger Woods

How can Golf cause Back Pain

As we watch events such as the Ryder Cup it’s no wonder golfers suffer a lot of back pain. Initially, the spine is twisted really far in one direction for the backswing; then, after hesitating for a second, the golfer’s back must suddenly change direction, forcefully twist and bend through the downswing, so this is an asymmetric, ballistic movement.

Studies have shown that the chiropractic adjustment can improve the range of motion of spinal joints. No big surprise here. Further, the adjustment can also help to correct improper muscle firing patterns established from previous injuries. What this means to the avid golfer is likely more accuracy, increased muscle efficiency, greater power, and ultimately better performance with less chance of injury, especially low back pain. According to Tiger, “Golfers who consistently get it up and down around the green have two things in common: great technique and good posture.” (Golf Digest, February 2001)

Reading Chiropractors help relieve Golf caused Back PainWhen a player experiences back pain during a round of golf, their scores suffer and their enjoyment is taken away from the game. There is a higher rate of injury amongst those players with poor flexibility, trunk control, postural control, and improper muscle firing patterns. In addition, back pain, neck, shoulder and elbow pain will sabotage any golf swing and ruin the golf experience. It shouldn’t be that way and it doesn’t have to.Regular chiropractic treatment can help alleviate golf back pain and injuries and get your game to where it is supposed to be.

Andrew Green, of Reflex Chiropractic , also holds the ICCSP (International Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician) qualification and leads a team well versed in effectively treating sports injury, including many presentations of back pain in golfers.

Regular chiropractic care is not just for golfers but for all of us for the treatment AND prevention of injuries. If you value your leisure time activities, consider scheduling a check up appointment with your Reading Chiropractors at Reflex Chiropractic to see how chiropractic care can be of benefit to you!

Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center was introduced to Korea Media

Introducing Korea’s sole US AK (Applied Kinesiology), CBP (Chiropractic Biophysics), ART (Active Release Technique) certified spine correction center
“Chiropractors are Chiropractic Doctors”
Dr. Willam Choi, Director of Ideal Wellness Center/ Prof. of Health Management and Chiropractic Department at Hanseo University
Correcting body shape with US certified non-surgery chiropractic
Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine for remedial treatment especially of spine. It was introduced by western doctors in the advanced countries such as US, Canada and Australia. It sees exercise and nutritional management as part of treatment methods as nerves, muscles and skeletal structures are organically connected each other and affects our health. Director Dr. William Choi of Ideal Wellness Center said “Chiropractic is the abbreviation of ‘chiro’ meaning hands and ‘practice’ meaning treatments. For this reason, chiropractic uses hands to correct muscles, nerves and skeletal structures in the body. Like an untuned musical instrument makes bad sound, a warped skeletal structure can cause problems in our nerve and muscle systems.
Chiropractic also adjusts metabolic abilities between cranial and spinal nerves to maintain a sound body. People with spinal problems, pregnant women, babies & children and sports men can greatly benefit from Chiropractic.” Dr. Choi grew up in an oriental doctor family but went to the US to study architectural engineering at University of Illinois at Chicago. He then met a chiropractor and realized that the concept of chiropractic that manages the potential pain beforehand was similar to oriental medicine. One year before finishing his major in architectural engineering, Dr. Choi switched school to Logan College of Chiropractic. He was the first Asian receiving Best Intern Award (Student Doctor Award) in the history of the college since its establishment in 1935. Dr. Choi went back to Korea and opened Korea’s sole US AK (Applied Kinesiology), CBP (Chiropractic Biophysics), ART (Active Release Technique) certified spine correction center: Ideal Wellness Center. Dr. Choi introduced 3R Treatment System consisting of ‘Relaxation’ to release muscle fatigue and to balance the body, ‘Re-alignment’ to correct skeletal structure and ‘Re-education’ to manage the corrected body.
Other treatment programs of the center include pelvic correction after childbirth, sports injury, rolfing therapy and special care. The center is also running Scoliosis Center, Correction Center and Pain Care Center and the length of programs varies from 3 weeks to 36 weeks.
“Koreans’ recognition on chiropractic is urgent!”
Dr. Choi is a full member of ACA (US) and is serving as Vice Chairman of KAC (Korea). Dr. Choi is regarded as one of top chiropractors in the world as the famous musical teams such as ‘Chicago’ and ‘Crazy Horse’ received treatment from Dr. Choi before they give performance in Korea. However, Korean’s misunderstanding and lack of recognition on chiropractic makes just a few patients who know well about the concept of the treatment visit the center. Most of them are foreigners, political and economic figures and professionals. Chiropractic is an official medicine listed in WHO and advanced countries like the US, Canada and Australia recognize chiropractors as doctors. It is regretful that even Spinal Manipulation and Chuna Manual Therapy (hand massage) have a limited access to the public in Korea. Currently, there are about 30 licensed chiropractors in Korea but they are still not officially recognized as D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic). The problem is that there are people who use this drawback and forge a certificate or run an unprofessional business. People must notice that overseas chiropractic degree clearly indicates the name ‘doctor’. Dr. Choi said “The US, for example, requires you to pass the courses of medical school to be qualified as chiropractic doctor. In other words, you have to finish a 3 year undergraduate course and a 4 year major course as well as 4 times of national board examinations to be licensed as a chiropractor.”
The good news is that Hanseo University is recognized as the sole chiropractic specialized university in Korea and Prof. Choi has been fostering talented students for the last 10 years. Also, Ideal Wellness Center has built a network with 11 chiropractic clinics in the world. Power Korea hopes that the Korean government and the medical circles recognize the value of chiropractic as soon as possible so that Dr. Choi, Ideal Wellness Center and Hanseo University together can be able to provide quality chiropractic services to more Korean people who suffer from spine problems and other related diseases.
