Probiotics May Help You Lose Weight - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Probiotics May Help You Lose Weight

Author: Marissa Luck

A new study adds to the growing list of benefits from probiotics. Researchers from the Universite Lavel in Canada found that taking certain probiotics enhanced weight loss efforts in women.

According to Science Daily, earlier studies have demonstrated that intestinal flora differs in obese people compared to thin individuals. The reason behind that difference may lie in the fact that obese people are more likely to have a diet high in fat and low in fiber, which encourages certain bacteria instead of others.

In a new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers enrolled 125 overweight people to participate in a weight loss program. The study consisted of 12 weeks of focused weight loss efforts followed by a 12 weeks of a weight maintenance program. The participants were randomly assigned to receive either probiotic pills or placebo pills to be taken every day throughout the study.

By the end of the first 12 weeks, the women in the probiotic group had dropped 4.4 kg on average compared to just 2.6 kg lost in the placebo group, (or 9.7 lbs lost compared to 5.7 lbs). In the second half of the study, during the weight maintenance period, the women in the placebo group maintained a stable weight. However the women in the probiotic group lost an additional 5.2 kg (11.46 lbs) per person. They also experienced a decreased concentration of the intestinal bacteria tied to obesity, as well as a drop in the appetite-regulating hormone, leptin.

These changes were not seen in men however. It’s possible that the dosage may have been too low or the study period too short to see the effects in men, the authors hypothesized. Still the results of their study show that probiotics may play an important role in the prevention of obesity and type 2 diabetes, when used in combination with weight loss efforts like diet and increased physical activity.

The study specifically focused on lactobacillus rhamnosus, a probiotic strain that belongs to Nestle and is only available in European markets. However, the study authors suspect that North American products could have similar results.

Being overweight is known to exacerbate chronic musculoskeletal conditions, which is why many chiropractors advise their patients on safe, natural ways to lose and maintain weight.

Got Back Pain? Chiropractic Works - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Got Back Pain? Chiropractic Works

By Editorial Staff

Whether you're a current chiropractic patient or just considering becoming one, low back pain may be the reason why. Nearly 80 percent of adults experience at least one episode of low back pain during their lifetime, and for many, the pain can recur and/or become chronic.

Fortunately, the research continues to suggest spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustments) is a primary treatment option to get rid of the pain.

Case in point: a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, no less, that reviewed 15 studies and found spinal manipulation reduced pain and improved function after six weeks of treatment. The benefits were similar to those achieved with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), common over-the-counter pain relievers that come with a long list of potential side effects, particularly if used for more than a short time.

These findings are particularly important because as we've discussed several times in recent issues, managing pain with drugs – particularly opioids – has become a dangerous epidemic, and health care providers of all types are increasingly appreciating the value of nondrug care for back pain. In fact, the American College of Physicians' new guidelines on low back pain recommend spinal manipulation among the nonpharmaceutical options that should be tried first, before resorting to medication. Talk to your doctor for more information.

Watermelon Juice Soothes Post-Exercise Muscle Soreness - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Watermelon Juice Soothes Post-Exercise Muscle Soreness

Author: Marissa Luck

Stock up on your favorite summer fruit while you’ll can: a new studyfound that watermelon juice can naturally alleviate muscle soreness after exercise.

Watermelon juice has previously been found to have antioxidant properties which may boost muscle protein and aide in athletic performance. The key to its effects lie in an amino acid known as L-citrulline.

Researchers publishing in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistrysought to test the effects of watermelon juice on a group of healthy volunteers. They wondered whether watermelon juice enriched with extra L-citrulline could be more beneficial than natural watermelon juice or control beverage. The volunteers drank one of the three beverages before exercise, and were tested for heart rate and muscles soreness 24 hours after their work out.

Both forms of watermelon juice, enriched and un-enriched, reduced muscle compared to the control beverage. The un-enriched, un-pasteurized juice actually appeared to be more bioavailable than the enriched juice, meaning it was easier for the body to access the amino acid L-citrulline.

Drinking watermelon juice is just one way to naturally prevent and relieve muscle soreness. Massage therapy was also found to assist the body in cell regeneration and recovery after vigorous exercise in one study. Pain medications, while they can relieve symptoms, may actually suppress the body’s natural response to inflammation, which can prolong the pain of a difficult workout. A study last year showed that people who took an anti-inflammatory painkillers after vigorous exercise actually experienced longer periods of soreness compared to people who went drug-free.

Athletes looking for effective recovery after a workout may find better relief with non-drug options like massage therapy, chiropractic, and improved nutrition.

Back Pain & Risk of Falling: A Dangerous Combination - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Back Pain & Risk of Falling: A Dangerous Combination

By Editorial Staff

In our last edition, we featured research suggesting chronic back pain may lead to mental health problems including depression, stress and even psychosis. But the reality gets more grim, particularly if you're a senior: Back pain may increase the risk of falling, and when you're older, that can be a serious health issue with serious consequences.

Here's why: According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), more than 1.6 million older U.S. adults visit the ER for a fall-related injury every year. In fact, falls are the No. 1 cause of fractures, hospital admissions for trauma, loss of independence and injury deaths among the elderly population.

Now back to the latest study: Researchers tracked more than 6,000 men ages 65 and older, assessing their frequency of back pain, episodes of falling and other variables that could also influence fall risk (medication use, dizziness, disabilities and pain in other areas of the body). Men who reported back pain were 30 percent more likely to suffer multiple falls compared to men without back pain, and risk correlated with the prevalence of back pain: two sites of pain increased the risk compared to just one site, and three sites increased the risk even further. Increasing severity and frequency of back pain also increased fall risk, according to the study.

The takeaway is simple: If you're suffering from back pain, regardless of age, it's time to visit your doctor of chiropractic. Your body will thank you for it.

Plane Crash Survivor’s Back Pain Healed by Chiropractor - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Plane Crash Survivor’s Back Pain Healed by Chiropractor

Author: Kelly Johnson

A recent case study highlighted the efficacy of chiropractic care and flexion-distraction therapy for chronic back pain after severe personal injuries.

Cox Flexion Distraction is a low-velocity spinal adjustment procedure that is applied using a specialized table or instrument, in addition to manual contact. Trained chiropractors use flexion distraction to decrease pressure between spinal discs, increase disc height, improve range of motion, and more. Approximately 60% of chiropractors in the United States use Cox Flexion Distraction therapy in their practice.

The case study involved a 34-year-old man with nonspecific low-back pain. The patient had suffered serious injuries and lumbar fractures in a plane crash eight years prior to the study, and had undergone several back surgeries, including lumbar fusion, vertebrectomy, and cage reconstruction.

The patient then went on to suffer a lumbar disc herniation two years later. When the study began, he reported over three years of chronic low-back and hip pain, characterizing his pain as sharp, stabbing, and continuous, and rated it a 6 out of 10 on a symptom scale. He had tried exercises prescribed by a physical therapist with no improvement.

Considering his history, examination, and diagnostic imaging results, the man was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, and adjacent segment degeneration associated with his previous spinal fusion procedures.

For four weeks, a trained doctor of chiropractic treated the patient with Cox Flexion Distraction. After this short treatment period, the patient’s self-reported symptoms and pain were reduced to 0 out of 10. Three months after the chiropractic treatment ended, the man, who was a dentist, reported that he was able to work full days with no pain. At nine months, he still had no pain or other symptoms.

While this case report only included one patient, it shows a remarkable success in using chiropractic flexion distraction to treat adjacent segment degeneration. The patient was able to resume his work and lifestyle activities without resorting to further surgeries. Previous research has also shown the procedure to be effective for relieving sciatica after failed back surgery.

Why Weight Loss Cuts Back Pain - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Why Weight Loss Cuts Back Pain

Author: Marissa Luck

There’s more to weight loss than fitting into your favorite jeans — it just may be your ticket out of chronic pain. So, how?

Research shows obesity not only increases your risk of lumbar disc herniation and pain in the lower back, it inhibits the effectiveness of back pain treatment. Like a smoker who continues to blow through a pack a day even as she receives cancer treatment, overweight people who fail to shed pounds cannot expect to get the full benefits of spinal treatments. When the spine is loaded with additional weight, the space between the spinal discs decreases, compressing or irritating surrounding nerves.

A 2008 study from the journal Spine sought to see just how much slimming down could impact treatment outcomes for back pain. A team of orthopedists studied 30 morbidly obese people who had just undergone a major weight loss procedure (bariatic surgery). Researchers then tracked the progress of pain as patients shed pounds. As BMI levels dropped, the space between the discs in the lumbar spine expanded. This freed up pressure on pinched nerves, and over time, reduced pain.

Fortunately you don’t have to resort to weight loss surgery to experience similar results. Exercise, diet and chiropractic care can often do the trick for many patients, according to recent research. So if you’re looking to rid yourself of pain while squeezing into those skinny jeans, give a chiropractor a call.

Headaches May Signal Serious Conditions in Pregnancy - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Headaches May Signal Serious Conditions in Pregnancy

Author: Christina DeBusk

As if raging hormones and growing pains weren’t enough, most pregnant women struggle with at least one bad headache or two. But a recent study from The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist suggests that not all headaches are created equal. In fact, some of them can even be signs of rare, serious conditions that require further medical treatment.

The literature review revealed that neurological issues are the third leading cause of maternal deaths in the U.K. Further, expecting mothers who suffer from regular migraine-type headaches have double the risk of developing a condition called preeclampsia, which is characterized as having dangerously high blood pressure and, in some cases, fluid retention and proteinuria (which may signal kidney damage).

Additionally, pregnant women who are classified as obese are at risk of a rare condition called idiopathic intracranial hypertension, which is when pressure increases in the skull, causing a headache and, if untreated, even possibly death.

A third cause of pregnancy-related headaches is a condition called cerebral venous thrombosis, or CVT. This involves having a blood clot in the venous sinuses which brings about symptoms such as head pain and vomiting, and can be brought about by a caesarean delivery, infection, or anemia.

For these reasons, it is important for pregnant women to report any headache-related issues to her obstetrician or gynecologist to rule out any serious issues. It is also imperative that chiropractors and other health professionals recognize that head pain in expecting mothers can be a sign of a more serious condition and urge her to seek testing and evaluation to ensure that this is not the case.

However, if the headaches are caused simply by stress, hormones, muscle contractions or nerve impingement, a chiropractor can help alleviate some of the pain through soothing and restoring manipulations. This allows proper blood flow to get to all areas of your body and creates a pregnancy that is full of joy and excitement – not pain and discomfort.

Previous research has demonstrated that chiropractic is effective for migraines and cervicogenic headaches.
