Probiotics May Help You Lose Weight - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Probiotics May Help You Lose Weight

Author: Marissa Luck

A new study adds to the growing list of benefits from probiotics. Researchers from the Universite Lavel in Canada found that taking certain probiotics enhanced weight loss efforts in women.

According to Science Daily, earlier studies have demonstrated that intestinal flora differs in obese people compared to thin individuals. The reason behind that difference may lie in the fact that obese people are more likely to have a diet high in fat and low in fiber, which encourages certain bacteria instead of others.

In a new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers enrolled 125 overweight people to participate in a weight loss program. The study consisted of 12 weeks of focused weight loss efforts followed by a 12 weeks of a weight maintenance program. The participants were randomly assigned to receive either probiotic pills or placebo pills to be taken every day throughout the study.

By the end of the first 12 weeks, the women in the probiotic group had dropped 4.4 kg on average compared to just 2.6 kg lost in the placebo group, (or 9.7 lbs lost compared to 5.7 lbs). In the second half of the study, during the weight maintenance period, the women in the placebo group maintained a stable weight. However the women in the probiotic group lost an additional 5.2 kg (11.46 lbs) per person. They also experienced a decreased concentration of the intestinal bacteria tied to obesity, as well as a drop in the appetite-regulating hormone, leptin.

These changes were not seen in men however. It’s possible that the dosage may have been too low or the study period too short to see the effects in men, the authors hypothesized. Still the results of their study show that probiotics may play an important role in the prevention of obesity and type 2 diabetes, when used in combination with weight loss efforts like diet and increased physical activity.

The study specifically focused on lactobacillus rhamnosus, a probiotic strain that belongs to Nestle and is only available in European markets. However, the study authors suspect that North American products could have similar results.

Being overweight is known to exacerbate chronic musculoskeletal conditions, which is why many chiropractors advise their patients on safe, natural ways to lose and maintain weight.

Back and Neck Pain Can Deprive You of Sleep - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Back and Neck Pain Can Deprive You of Sleep

Author: Kelly Johnson

Chronic pain in the neck and low back can cause a host of lifestyle problems and health complications.

A retrospective study has shown that chronic back and neck pain can lead to sleep impairment as well.

Researchers in Germany evaluated 1,016 patient records from an orthopedic department at a university hospital. All the patients had consulted orthopedic doctors with chronic neck pain or chronic low back pain. The study also analyzed factors such as gender, age, diagnosis, pain intensity, and country of origin.

The study found that more than 42% of the patients with chronic back or neck pain had sleep deprivation, even when pain medications were being used. Almost 20% of the patients reported serious sleep impairment, defined as less than four hours sleep per night.

The researchers found no connection between sleep disturbances and age or gender. They did find a correlation between sleep impairment and pain intensity in the neck or low back. Patients who had migrated from another country also had a higher sleep-deprivation risk than the native Germans in the study. Additionally, it was discovered that patients with failed back surgery syndrome were more likely to suffer from sleep problems.

The authors of the study concluded that treatment for chronic neck and back pain should include sleep assessment, especially for patients with high pain intensity, failed back surgery syndrome, and a background of moving between countries.

Sleep deprivation associated with chronic pain is just one of the many health problems that can be addressed under the expert care of a chiropractor.

On the Safety of the Chiropractic Adjustment - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

On the Safety of the Chiropractic Adjustment

The term chiropractic comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." Effective treatment by hand is exactly what chiropractors do, delivering gentle adjustments to the spine and musculoskeletal system to maximize wellness and prevent dysfunction.

Complications resulting from any procedure are always unfortunate, regardless of the health care professional administering care.

While a certain degree of risk accompanies all health interventions, specific concerns have been raised over the safety of spinal manipulation.

But have no fear: As a study in the Chiropractic Journal of Australia professes, the chiropractic adjustment is "one of the most conservative, least invasive and safest of procedures within the health care professions." The study compared complication rates, specifically cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs) and/or death attributable to spinal manipulation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and numerous medical procedures. The author emphasizes that the potential risk of "catastrophic" side-effects from spinal manipulation is substantially lower than most common medical procedures.

If you're interested in safe conservative care for yourself and your loved ones, schedule an appointment with a doctor of chiropractic.

Chiropractic Patients Recover Faster, Spend Less Money - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Chiropractic Patients Recover Faster, Spend Less Money

Author: Michael Melton

Back pain is an expensive health problem for both patients and businesses. A 2012 study reported that we spend about $635 billion on pain every year, with a significant amount of that spent on back pain. Over the years, quite a few studies have shown that chiropractic care is more effective for back pain than medical care, plus chiropractic patients spend less money on their care than medical patients do.

Because back pain is such a common problem, a group of Canadian researchers recently investigated the role that the type of primary caregiver has on financial compensation.

This was a large study of 5,511 patients who experienced a work-related back injury in Ontario, Canada. The patients saw the following providers for their first visit:
85.3% saw a medical doctor
11.4% saw a chiropractor
3.2% saw a physical therapist

The authors set out to “compare the duration of financial compensation for back pain” among patients from each care group.

The study found that chiropractic patients had the shortest amount of time receiving compensation for their pain and also were less likely to have a recurrence.

In addition, chiropractic patients didn’t need to see other healthcare providers for their pain. 75% of chiropractic patients saw no other provider, while 58.6% of physical therapy patients also saw a medical doctor.

The authors conclude:

“The type of healthcare provider first visited for back pain is a determinant of the duration of financial compensation during the first 5 months. Chiropractic patients experience the shortest duration of compensation, and physiotherapy patients experience the longest.”

Seatbelts and the Risk of Auto Injury - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Seatbelts and the Risk of Auto Injury

    Author: Donna Schwontkowski

Orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons at the Medical College of Wisconsin see a lot of spine injuries in patients who have been in an auto accident. You may not be aware of it, but the leading cause of spine injuries in your midback (thoracic) and low back (lumbar) areas is auto accidents.

In a study, doctors evaluated records of 4572 patients between 1996 and 2011 entered into the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network database who were moderately to severely injured in an auto accident. They looked for what these patients had in common.

Of 631 patients who had injuries to the thoracic and lumbar spine, almost 47% of the patients had major injuries while 53% had minor injuries. These injuries could be categorized as flexion-distraction injuries where the person has had an injury from the upper body and head moving towards their knees in the auto accident, or extension injuries where the body bends backward.

If the auto accident caused a flexion-distraction injury, the victim was usually a child or young adult. Those suffering from extension injuries were usually older adults with an average age of 65 years old, and were overweight. The auto accidents that caused extension injuries were the worst, as the fatality rate was almost 24%. Other auto accidents had a fatality rate of about 11%.

The doctors discovered that if the auto accident caused minor injuries to the thoracic and lumbar spine, the patients’ injuries were worse. This was because they were usually abdominal and pelvic injuries.

    Seatbelt use

Interestingly, there was a difference between those who used a two-point belted seatbelt versus a three-point belted seatbelt. The three-point seat belts protected against neurological injury, fatality, and worse injuries. However, in the auto accident, those who were wearing the three-point seatbelts were more than three times more likely to have fractures of the spine than with the two-point seatbelts. Those who used two-point belted seatbelts had flexion-distraction injuries most of the time. Those who didn’t wear a seatbelt at all had a higher risk of having spinal fractures in the thoracic and lumbar areas as well as dislocations.

This tells us that in an auto accident, using seatbelts will reduce injury severity of mortality but at the same time, it will also increase the likelihood of a vertebrae fracture in the thoracic and lumbar spine.

If you have been injured in an auto accident, seek proper medical and chiropractic care. Utilizing both together will help speed your recovery.

Relieving Back Pain during Pregnancy - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

      Relieving Back Pain during Pregnancy

Ah, the indescribable joys of pregnancy. The anticipation of new life, the intimate, developing bond between mother and child ... and the back pain. More than 50% of women experience back pain during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, and frequently the pain can be excruciating and debilitating.

A Swedish study involving 258 pregnant women investigated whether water gymnastics could reduce the intensity of back pain and the number of days taken for sick leave. Women were divided equally into two groups: an exercise group that participated in water gymnastics (one hour of relaxation exercises, performed in a swimming pool and accompanied by music) during the second half of their pregnancy; and a control group that did not participate in water gymnastics.

Although back pain intensity increased during the course of pregnancy for both groups, the exercise group reported less pain compared with the control group. The total number of reported days on sick leave was also lower in the exercise group (982 days taken) compared with controls (1,484 days taken).

Many of the joys and frustrations of parenthood will last much longer than nine months, so prepare yourself. But back pain is one frustration that doesn't have to last. If you¹re expecting a child and are experiencing back pain, talk to your doctor of chiropractic about making your pregnancy as pain-free as possible.

Is Seeing a Chiropractor Safe During Pregnancy? - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Is Seeing a Chiropractor Safe During Pregnancy?

Low back pain can be a serious problem when you’re expecting: A recent study shows that 61% of women report back pain at some during pregnancy.

“Despite the apparent impact it has on women, many cases of low back pain of pregnancy go unreported to prenatal providers and/or untreated,” researchers publishing in the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health wrote. Unfortunately, many conventional treatments for back pain (like drugs, surgery or steroid injections) aren’t an option during pregnancy. So what should women in debilitating discomfort do?

Researchers decided to study the effects of chiropractic care on 17 women with low back pain lasting an average of 21.7 days. The intensity of the back pain was 5.9 on a 1-10 scale, and the onset of pain occurred at 20.6 weeks into the pregnancy. For 28% of women, pregnancy was the first time they ever have experienced intense back problems and 75% said they had not suffered from lower back pain prior to pregnancy.

Each study participant was treated with chiropractic care according to the particular symptoms that the patient was experiencing. The authors reported the following:
About half of the women were self-referred, and the other half were referred by their obstetrician.
The average time to reach clinically significant pain relief was 4.5 days, while the range was from 0 to 13 days after the initial treatment.
The average number of chiropractic treatments necessary to reach clinically relevant pain relief was 1.8.
The pain levels decreased from the 5.9 at the beginning of the study to 1.5 at the end.
The patients received between 3 to 15 treatments, with the average being 5.6.
One patient did not experience clinically significant pain reduction.
There were no adverse reactions reported by any of the patients.

This corroborates other studies showing that chiropractic offers a safe solution for pain while you’re expecting. For instance, a study published in the journal Chiropractic and Manual Therapies found that 85% of pregnant patients had significant improvements in pain within three months of receiving chiropractic treatments for back and pelvic problems. Another study showed that chiropractic was more effective than standard medical care for alleviating pregnancy-related back pain. In both studies, there were no serious adverse effects of treatment.

Chiropractors use a low-force, gentler style of adjustments when caring for mothers-to-be. Plus, women do not have to worry about the potential impact that painkillers may have on a growing fetus. Instead chiropractic offers drug-free, natural relief to ensure your pregnancy is as comfortable as possible.

Back Pain may Raise Risk of Mental Health Problems - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Back pain may raise risk of mental health problems

      Chiropractic Economics December 13, 2016

December 5, 2016—A study, involving almost 200,000 participants, finds that individuals who have back pain are more likely to also experience a range of mental health issues. Knowing about these links could form a more successful treatment plan for both sets of conditions.

Back pain is a leading cause of disability across the globe. In fact, it causes more global disability than any other condition. According to the Global Burden of Disease study, lower back pain affects almost 1 in 10 people. There is also a wealth of evidence that back pain negatively impacts quality of life and heightens the risk of other physical health problems. Additionally, it comes with substantial healthcare cost.

One earlier study of note used data from the World Mental Health Survey and found that chronic back or neck pain was associated with increased risk for mood disorders, alcohol abuse, and anxiety disorders.

Despite its high prevalence, little work has been done to investigate back pain’s links with mental health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The largest back pain-mental health study to date

The latest and largest study to investigate the connections between back pain and psychological illness in LMICs was published this week in the journal General Hospital Psychiatry.

The research team – headed up by Patricia Schofield and Brendon Stubbs from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom – took data from 190,595 individuals aged 18 or older across 43 countries, making it the largest study of its type. Of the 43 countries, 19 were low-income and 24 were middle-income.

The team used data from the World Health Survey 2002-2004, a project set up by the World Health Organization (WHO) to “generate information on the health of adult populations and health systems.”

Overall, in LMICs, back pain affected 35.1 percent of the population, and 6.9 percent reported chronic back pain. Of the countries investigated, China’s levels of back pain were lowest, at 13.7 percent.

In some countries, more than half of respondents reported back pain; Nepal was highest with 57.1 percent. Similarly, 53.1 percent of Bangladeshis reported back pain, as well as 52 percent of people from Brazil.

      Back pain and mental health

The analysis of the questionnaire data showed that, when compared with people without back pain, those who did experience back pain were more than twice as likely to experience one of five mental health conditions – anxiety, depression, psychosis, stress, and sleep deprivation.

People with chronic back pain were also three times more likely to experience a depressive episode and 2.6 times more likely to experience psychosis.

Interestingly, the results were relatively similar across all 43 LMICs, regardless of their standing on the socioeconomic ladder.

“Our data shows that both back pain and chronic back pain are associated with an increased likelihood of depression, psychosis, anxiety, stress, and sleep disturbances. This suggests that back pain has important mental health implications which may make recovery from back pain more challenging. The exact reasons for this are yet to be established.” Stubbs says.

Because the study used such a large group of people across a section of populations, the findings can be considered highly reliable. As back pain is so prevalent in LMICs (and the world at large), any connection to mental health needs to be thoroughly understood.

As Stubbs says: “Further research is required to find out more about the links between these problems and to ensure effective treatments can be developed. It is also important that healthcare professionals are made aware of this link to refer patients to other services if necessary.”

Explaining the POP! Behind A Chiropractic Adjustment - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

The Pop! Explaining the Noise Behind A Chiropractic Adjustment by Dr. Nicolas Campos

I'd like to tell you about a patient of mine named Emily (not her real name). Emily swore to her husband that she'd never have her neck adjusted – at least not willfully, anyway. That was five years ago. She stayed true to that promise until she and her husband were involved in a freeway accident which spun their car around three times before slamming it into the median (thank God for medians!). Poor Emily was both jacked up and in a position where not having her neck adjusted was just not an option.

This, of course, was a blessing in disguise. Not only did Emily have her neck adjusted several times (which allowed her body to heal), but she has been a loyal customer ever since. She even had me adjust her son when he was one week old (that's right, birthing can be tough on a baby too, you know?). While adjusting Emily last week, I asked her, “Did you ever in your wildest dreams think you'd be getting your neck adjusted five years later on your own volition?” Her answer – “Heck no!”

It's no surprise that some people are afraid to be adjusted. Whenever we encounter something new or unfamiliar it can be a little frightening, especially when that something involves trusting a total stranger with their hands around your neck. Making matters worse, when you finally give in to your ambivalence, a quick move and a loud crack can all but wipe away any feelings of calmness you might have been mustering.

If you feel this way every time you get on a chiropractor's table, don't fret. The instantaneous relief you receive from that same chiropractic adjustment more than makes up for any jitters you might have had a microsecond earlier. Emily's fears and hesitations are not uncommon – I have many people come into my office feeling the same way – but I find that the best way to ease one's fears of being adjusted requires a few things: patience, understanding, sympathy, and most importantly, a simple explanation of what's happening during an adjustment.
      Subluxations

First, it's important for people to know exactly what we are adjusting. Chiropractors adjust subluxations. Some chiropractors explain a subluxation as a misaligned bone – and there's truth to that – but I find it more accurate and easier to grasp explaining it as a joint that has become stuck. A subluxation is a joint that has lost its full range of motion; basically, it is a stuck joint.

Stuck joints cause a number of dire consequences for the body. The first and most obvious is a lack of motion: stiffness, feeling locked up, or the inability to turn one's head or stand up straight. Some other major problems are pain, inflammation and loss of function. And then there is the neurological component. Subluxations can, and often do, irritate the nerve tissue as it exits the spine. This can lead to a disruption in the normal function of this very delicate and precise system. Left uncorrected, especially for a long period of time (months, years, decades), subluxations can cumulatively disrupt the function of the body and its various systems, leaving the body out of sync.
      Chiropractic Adjustments

When a chiropractor detects a subluxation, he or she will then correct it with a chiropractic adjustment. There are many techniques a chiropractor might use to adjust a subluxation. In my office, you get it the old fashioned way – contact the spine; quick, painless thrust; loud pop; voilà: subluxation corrected.

I find that the loud pop is what really unnerves some new and unsure patients. I think that understanding what's happening physically helps ease the mind and helps make the entire process go over that much smoother. To begin with, a chiropractic adjustment is not “bones cracking”. Chiropractors do nothing with the bone except set up on it. When an adjustment is administered, it's the joint that's opening up – we call it gapping the joint . When a joint opens up, think of it like pulling apart two surfaces that have been stuck together by a sticky substance – when they release, you hear a pop.
      The Pop!

The actual pop is called a cavitation, and it's the release of gas that makes the popping sound. The joints of the spine are called synovial joints (check out this simple and detailed description here) and they produce a fluid called synovial fluid. Synovial fluid lubricates the joint (for movement) and nourishes it. The byproducts formed in the production of synovial fluid are gasses – oxygen, nitrogen and CO2. When a joint is gapped, or opened up, the gas is released and you hear a distinctive popping sound. It's very similar to the release of gas bubbles when you cork a champagne bottle, and equally pleasant in its after effects.

Speaking of after effects, what happens next? Once the joint is opened up, the synovial fluids re-lubricate the joint surfaces and normal motion is restored. Anybody who has ever had a stuck joint and has been unable to move properly (probably everybody reading this article) knows exactly what follows the adjustment – relief. True, depending on the situation – how severe the subluxation is, how long it has been festering and how “hot” or acute it is – determines how complete the relief will be, but without a doubt, most people feel better almost immediately.

That's why Emily could never stay true to her promise. She just couldn't deny how great she felt following an adjustment. Sure, she came in initially to facilitate the healing of her severely battered body. However, she kept coming back because getting adjusted has allowed her to function optimally, keep up with a tireless three-year-old and feel darn good doing it. If that ain't worth a “pop” then I don't know what is.

10 Reasons to Consider Chiropractic Therapy - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

10 Reasons You Should Consider Chiropractic Therapy

By Dr. David Jockers DC, MS, CSCS

One of the most sought after forms of alternative healing is chiropractic care. Amongst cancer survivors who seek chiropractic therapy, 84% do so to alleviate pain, improve mood and sleeping habits, as well as to relieve stress.

The purpose of chiropractic treatment is not only to relieve pain, but to improve quality of life by alleviating systemic problems relating to muscles and the central nervous system. Given the researched benefits of chiropractic care, it is likely that you or someone you know could benefit from this alternative therapy.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 reasons you might benefit from chiropractic care.

      1. Elevates Sports Performance

Both athletes and non-athletes can benefit from sports-specific chiropractors. These specialized doctors have a focus on manipulating joints, soft tissue, and the spine to improve recovery time and prevent injury of strains, sprains, and even concussions.

Chiropractors can teach you how to focus on the proper techniques for the sport you play. This will include stretching techniques which can reduce the occurrence of an injury, the severity of an injury, and a recommended rehabilitation time frame for healing.

      2. Reduces Headaches

Do you have frequent headaches? Do you find that headaches dramatically impact your health and ability to maintain the lifestyle you want? Neck pressure and movement can exacerbate the severity of headaches caused by abnormal head positioning such as hunching over at a computer during the work day.

Chiropractic therapy can remove obstructing structures causing the tightness in the back and strain on the spine. Receiving chiropractic care is an effective way to limit the occurrence of headaches, and lessen the intensity when they do occur.

      3. Stimulates the Immune System

The immune system interacts directly with the nervous system affecting overall health. Again, obstructions with the signaling pathways between the nervous and the immune system impact the ability to heal adequately.

Without the use of surgery or medication, chiropractic care removes these barriers so that the body can properly repair itself at a genetic level and stimulate the immune system fully.

      4. Wellness and Prevention

Chiropractic procedures manipulate the spine and entail a variety of procedures which treat underlying health problems. For instance, decompression exercises improve sleeping habits and have no known side effects.

Gastrointestinal Issues: Gut complaints are some of the most commonly reported problems which affect all ages in today’s society and are due to systemic concerns. Colic, persistent constipation, heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be detected in infants to older adults and have likely affected you some time in your life. Irritable bowel syndrome is the most widespread condition worldwide.

Cancer: Education teaches all, especially cancer patients, how to improve wellness and prevent future occurrences or a secondary cancer. Chiropractic therapy focuses on some of the first common symptoms of cancer: musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction as well as chronic headaches.

In fact, 70% of advanced cancer patients, including those with cancer of the lungs, thyroid, breasts, kidney, and prostate have metastasized cancer in the skeletal system. Chiropractic treatment has also been shown to improve healing in cancer patients, as opposed to medication and other conventional therapies.

      5. Alleviates Allergies and Asthma

Both chiropractors and parents of children suffering from allergies such as asthma support the positive results of chiropractic treatment.

Studies also support that chiropractic therapy benefits patients by decreasing the amount of medication needed. They suffer fewer asthma attacks and report an overall lessening of symptoms leading to an improved quality of life.

      6. Pregnancy

Throughout pregnancy, many women experience chronic back pain due to the changing weight distribution on the pelvis and joints. Pain and muscle spasms may increase the likelihood that a pregnant mother will struggle during labor and delivery.

Chiropractic treatment focuses on balancing the muscles, pelvis, and ligaments during pregnancy to relieve pressure on the uterus. This treatment increases the likelihood that the child will be born via a preferable position while lowering the risk of being born through cesarean section.

Seventy-two percent of women report finding relief from pain during pregnancy and labor resulting from chiropractic care. Part of this success may due to the fact that women are encouraged and shown how to follow a proper exercise routine for pregnancy. This reduces weight gain, improves hormones, and allows for a more comfortable rest during sleep.

      7. Mitigates Chronic Pain

Low back pain affects more than 10% of the population globally, and is the most common occupational injury in the United States and Canada. North America ranks low back pain sixth amongst contributing factors for increased medical cost. Compared to conventional health management practices, chiropractic care is low cost and improves the healing of the entire body.

Doctors of chiropractic also focus on education, which is critical to reducing injuries, disability, care costs, and adverse side effects. Chiropractic therapy is also a patient preference for providing pain relief.

      8. Manages Behavioral and Learning Disabilities

Chiropractic procedures improve wellness and can help reduce hyperactivity and disruptive behaviors linked to ADHD and learning disabilities associated with autism.

Evidence supports that chiropractic treatment can better able a child to concentrate. In turn, it improves learning and behavior by limiting causes of agitation.

      9. Weakens Dependence on Medication and Medical Interventions

There has been a 65% increase in patients seeking spinal treatment over an 8 year period, contributing to a significant rise in healthcare costs. However, approximately 96% of people with low back pain can find relief without surgery. This could lead to a remarkable lowering of costs.

Chronic pain is on the rise. The first line of treatment most individuals turn to for pain relief involves medication. Tens of thousands of people consuming drugs like acetaminophen and oxycodone have reported injuries and deaths directly resulting from drug use. Drugs have adverse side effects unlike chiropractic care.

Young adults are especially susceptible to drug overdoses. Dr. Joseph Wiley, Chief of Pediatrics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, is quoted as saying “If you extrapolate from an adult dose to a pediatric dose, you may be right…you may be wrong.”

      10. Normalizes Blood Pressure

Hypertension affects around 33% of Americans. Most of these individuals will use medication to manage the condition. Chiropractic care can significantly control blood pressure. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to result in a decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.

In fact, tests show that chiropractic care works as effectively at managing hypertension as do two of the most commonly prescribed medications. Chiropractors focus on the bone at the top of the neck in proximity to the brain stem which may be the reason for the impact on regulating blood pressure.

Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center was introduced to Korea Media

Introducing Korea’s sole US AK (Applied Kinesiology), CBP (Chiropractic Biophysics), ART (Active Release Technique) certified spine correction center
      “Chiropractors are Chiropractic Doctors”
Dr. Willam Choi, Director of Ideal Wellness Center/ Prof. of Health Management and Chiropractic Department at Hanseo University
Correcting body shape with US certified non-surgery chiropractic
Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine for remedial treatment especially of spine. It was introduced by western doctors in the advanced countries such as US, Canada and Australia. It sees exercise and nutritional management as part of treatment methods as nerves, muscles and skeletal structures are organically connected each other and affects our health. Director Dr. William Choi of Ideal Wellness Center said “Chiropractic is the abbreviation of ‘chiro’ meaning hands and ‘practice’ meaning treatments. For this reason, chiropractic uses hands to correct muscles, nerves and skeletal structures in the body. Like an untuned musical instrument makes bad sound, a warped skeletal structure can cause problems in our nerve and muscle systems.
Chiropractic also adjusts metabolic abilities between cranial and spinal nerves to maintain a sound body. People with spinal problems, pregnant women, babies & children and sports men can greatly benefit from Chiropractic.” Dr. Choi grew up in an oriental doctor family but went to the US to study architectural engineering at University of Illinois at Chicago. He then met a chiropractor and realized that the concept of chiropractic that manages the potential pain beforehand was similar to oriental medicine. One year before finishing his major in architectural engineering, Dr. Choi switched school to Logan College of Chiropractic. He was the first Asian receiving Best Intern Award (Student Doctor Award) in the history of the college since its establishment in 1935. Dr. Choi went back to Korea and opened Korea’s sole US AK (Applied Kinesiology), CBP (Chiropractic Biophysics), ART (Active Release Technique) certified spine correction center: Ideal Wellness Center. Dr. Choi introduced 3R Treatment System consisting of ‘Relaxation’ to release muscle fatigue and to balance the body, ‘Re-alignment’ to correct skeletal structure and ‘Re-education’ to manage the corrected body.
Other treatment programs of the center include pelvic correction after childbirth, sports injury, rolfing therapy and special care. The center is also running Scoliosis Center, Correction Center and Pain Care Center and the length of programs varies from 3 weeks to 36 weeks.
“Koreans’ recognition on chiropractic is urgent!”
Dr. Choi is a full member of ACA (US) and is serving as Vice Chairman of KAC (Korea). Dr. Choi is regarded as one of top chiropractors in the world as the famous musical teams such as ‘Chicago’ and ‘Crazy Horse’ received treatment from Dr. Choi before they give performance in Korea. However, Korean’s misunderstanding and lack of recognition on chiropractic makes just a few patients who know well about the concept of the treatment visit the center. Most of them are foreigners, political and economic figures and professionals. Chiropractic is an official medicine listed in WHO and advanced countries like the US, Canada and Australia recognize chiropractors as doctors. It is regretful that even Spinal Manipulation and Chuna Manual Therapy (hand massage) have a limited access to the public in Korea. Currently, there are about 30 licensed chiropractors in Korea but they are still not officially recognized as D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic). The problem is that there are people who use this drawback and forge a certificate or run an unprofessional business. People must notice that overseas chiropractic degree clearly indicates the name ‘doctor’. Dr. Choi said “The US, for example, requires you to pass the courses of medical school to be qualified as chiropractic doctor. In other words, you have to finish a 3 year undergraduate course and a 4 year major course as well as 4 times of national board examinations to be licensed as a chiropractor.”
The good news is that Hanseo University is recognized as the sole chiropractic specialized university in Korea and Prof. Choi has been fostering talented students for the last 10 years. Also, Ideal Wellness Center has built a network with 11 chiropractic clinics in the world. Power Korea hopes that the Korean government and the medical circles recognize the value of chiropractic as soon as possible so that Dr. Choi, Ideal Wellness Center and Hanseo University together can be able to provide quality chiropractic services to more Korean people who suffer from spine problems and other related diseases.
