What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is an art, a philosophy, and a science combined to diagnose and treat the patient without drugs, lotions, or potions. Chiropractors use their hands to perform gentle adjustments to re-align the spine. A chiropractor focuses on misalignments in the spinal column that press on nerves and cause pain or disease in the body. Dr. Caillouet DC successfully treats patients of all ages for many different ailments. From three day old babies to the elderly, chiropractic is safe and effective.

Anxiety: Chiropractic Treatment Options - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Anxiety: Chiropractic Treatment Options

Anxiety can be a debilitating disorder that can be detrimental to everyday life. When it comes to anxiety, the first step is learning about the different types, the possible triggers and most importantly: how to treat it.

Types of Anxiety

If you have recently not felt like yourself, and think that maybe anxiety may be the reason behind this, it’s important to educate yourself on the different types of anxiety disorders. It is also important to know if anxiety runs in your family, as this may help you decipher which type you may be suffering from.

  • The different types of anxiety include:
  • Panic Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety Symptoms

The symptoms of anxiety may vary greatly depending on the type of anxiety and the individual person. The most common symptoms include:
  • Problems sleeping
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Cold or sweaty hands
  • Uneasiness

Possible Triggers

The most important part of treatment comes from knowing what may cause or trigger the early onset of an anxiety attack. The first step in recognizing these is by keeping a journal of possible activities or events happening leading up to the anxiety or panic attack. This can be used when discussing treatment options with your doctor.

There are two main factors that affect this type of disorder: physical and psychological. Some examples of some possible factors are:
  • Food allergies
  • Sugar
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Deficiencies of calcium, magnesium or B vitamins

Chiropractic Care

There are a variety of treatment options available for those suffering from anxiety. These treatment options can include: medication, psychotherapy (counseling), and lifestyle changes which may include changing what you eat to help avoid anxiety attacks. Another form of care that can be considered is chiropractic care.

What can chiropractic care offer someone who suffers from anxiety? There are a combination of treatments that are involved with chiropractic care, involving manipulation, and a change in diet.

Chiropractic manipulation may help with increasing brain activity and also help with the balance of the nervous system. It is also important for those that are seeking chiropractic care to be tested for any possible food allergies. Chiropractic care works best when there is a consistent outside care being made to the body, which includes a healthier lifestyle (excluding alcohol and caffeine) and seeking treatment with your current doctor.

ADHD and Migraine Improve with Chiropractic - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Case Study: ADHD and Migraine Improve with Chiropractic

Author: Christina DeBusk

Children who suffer with migraines have it tough. Not only do they have to find a way to deal with the throbbing pain coming from their head, but they may also experience behavioral or learning difficulties too. This can put them behind in school and in trouble at home, neither of which is a good place for a child to be.

Some researchers are finding that kids with migraines are being prescribed narcotics at an alarming rate, putting them at-risk of painkiller addictions and other adverse side effects associated with the drugs. For parents interested in a non-pharmaceutical method of managing migraines, one recent case study suggests that chiropractic care may not only resolve head pain, it could have a positive impact on learning and behavior in kids.

A Case Study

An adolescent male who was 15 years of age had a migraine headache for over a month. In addition to the consistent and recurrent head pain he was experiencing, he had also been diagnosed with three separate behavioral conditions, namely attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Tourette syndrome (TS), more than 10 years before.

Testing showed that even though the subject was in ninth grade, he scored between fourth and eighth grade levels. He also exhibited factors that confirmed his previous diagnoses for ADHD as he scored extremely high on that scale.

As a course of treatment, he engaged in regular spinal manipulations (42 in total) that involved realignment of the entire length of his spine. He also did exercises that were meant to assist with his treatment, all of which happened over the course of 19 weeks. The results?

Physically, he no longer had his migraine, his TS tics happened less often, and he even required new glasses because his vision had improved. Mentally, he experienced a 90% gain in his ability to be attentive and he was able to stay awake long enough to study, whereas he previously fell asleep when trying to learn.

This study confirms the benefits of chiropractic care on children who suffer from reoccurring headaches, as well as from behavioral and learning issues. That makes this drug-free treatment option a win-win for children and parents alike.

Surprising Number of Preteens Have Chronic Headache - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Surprising Number of Preteens Have Chronic Headache

Author: Marissa Luck

Preteens may experience headaches and neck pain far more often than their parents would expect. A Swedish study of 131 students ages 10-13 years old compared the spinal health of students with and without pain. A surprising finding was that parents significantly underreported their child’s experience of pain.

The study found a wide discrepancy between what the children and parents reported regarding the child’s health. Children rated their experience and frequency of pain on surveys, prior to the assessment. Parents were asked separately to answer the same questions on behalf of their children.

Nearly a third of of children reported that they “often” had neck pain and/or headaches yet only 6% of parents thought their kids frequently had headache. Similarly, 61% of children reported trauma to the head and/or neck region but only 20% of the parents said that their children had experienced such trauma.

Overall, 40% of students ages 10-13 reported some type of neck pain or headache. Long periods of reading or using the computer tended to make headache worse.

To address the prevalence of headaches, chiropractors can:
Educate adult patients about the high levels of neck pain and headaches among youth
Encourage parents to talk with their children about neck pain and/or headaches and its origins
Teach families techniques to prevent headaches following computer or reading time

Chiropractors who continue to educate themselves on the latest findings and techniques in pediatric chiropractic are best equipped to protect the development of children’s spines.

Why Chiropractic Helps With Stress Reduction - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Why Chiropractic Helps With Stress Reduction

by 100% Family - July 14, 2015

Stress is a reality of modern living. Especially in Western Society, where longer hours are being worked and the media is constantly overloading our senses with the latest tragedy, it’s easy to see why many people experience anxiety levels ranging from mild to gut wrenching. The good news is that chiropractic care is useful for helping individuals manage their stress levels. Read on to see how visiting a chiropractor might just be what you need to add more relaxation to your life.

First, it’s important to understand how the body reacts to stress. There are three basic “channels” through which we perceive stress: environment, body, and emotions. Environmental stress is rather self-explanatory; let’s say you are walking down a quiet road and you hear a loud bang nearby, similar to an explosion. That is an environmental stressor. Pollution would be another example of environmental stress.

Stress through the body includes illness, lack of sleep or poor nutrition. Emotional stress is slightly different, as it encompasses how we interpret certain things. For example, if someone you work with is being passive-aggressive, you may choose to become stressed — “is he/she mad at me for some reason?” — or you may choose brush it off — “they must be having a rough morning.” What’s unique about emotional stress is that we have control over how much of it we experience, much more so than environmental or body stressors.

Now that we understand how stress is received, we can discuss what effects it has on our health. When under stress, the body’s fight or flight response is triggered. Your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is stimulated, which means your heart beats faster and your senses become more acute. This is a leftover defense mechanism from prehistoric times; that is the reason we survived to today instead of all becoming lunch for hungry predators out in the wild.

However, the danger is that in modern society, we can become overstressed. Over the years many studies have been conducted to assess the impact of chronic stress on the body, with such consequences as high blood pressure, increased risk for heart disease, damage to muscle tissue, and more. While stress can be beneficial in certain high-performance situations, experiencing it constantly will leave you significantly worse for wear.

Luckily, chiropractic care can help you manage your stress. After all, chiropractic focuses on the spine, which is the root of the nervous system. One of the effects of chronic stress is muscle tension and contraction, which can lead to uneven pressure on the skeleton, which in turn leads to subluxations. Adjustments help ease muscle tension, which in turn eases the stress on certain parts of the skeleton and helps ease subluxations. Easing these subluxations — therefore achieving a balanced spine — is a crucial element of managing personal stress. As mentioned earlier, nutrition is also a crucial component of stress management, which is why we offer a wide range of supplements and workshops to empower the 100% family and help you to manage stress.

If you feel as though the daily stress in your life is getting to be too high, consider visiting us so we can assess what the best option will be for you!

Chiropractors Can Help with Weight Loss, Study Finds - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

Chiropractors Can Help with Weight Loss, Study Finds

Author: Marissa Luck

Trying to trim your waistline this spring? Working with your chiropractor could help. A new study demonstrates that chiropractors trained in nutrition and exercise therapies can support patients in achieving their weight loss goals. The study outlined how a chiropractic weight-loss program helped patients lose an average of 15 pounds over the course of 13 weeks.

Although chiropractors are typically thought of as back pain specialists, they’re also interested in the overall wellness and health of your body. Losing weight won’t just reduce back pain and other musculoskeletal symptoms, it will slash your risk of a number of medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. That’s why many chiropractors now incorporate weight loss, nutrition, and exercise counseling into their treatments.

A retrospective study published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice examined the results of a weight-loss program facilitated by chiropractors. At the start of program, 30 patients with BMI levels in the obese or overweight range enrolled in the program. Each participant was given specific exercise guidelines and caloric restrictions based on their individual characteristics. Participants logged their daily activity and caloric levels, and were given informational pamphlets on weight loss. Once per a week, the participants reviewed their exercise and diet logs with a chiropractor who provided them with counseling, advice, and spinal manipulation.

The average mean weight at the start of the study was 190.46 pounds. Of the 16 patients who completed the program, the ending average weight was 174.94 pounds, or a difference in 15.52 pounds. The patients also had an average decrease in their BMIs of 2.44 kg/m2. Both BMI and weight-reduction levels are considered statistically significant.

The researchers emphasized that their study did not assess the effectiveness of weight loss due to chiropractic adjustments alone. Instead, their study evaluated the whole program of chiropractic care which included exercise, nutrition, and individualized counseling.

“It may be that the chiropractors implementing this 13-week program spent more time (when compared [to] general medical practitioners) with their patients and possessed unique qualifications in exercise and nutritional counseling, which may have influenced the outcomes described,” the authors wrote. The findings show that chiropractors could have a meaningful impact on patient weight loss goals.

More parents taking kids to chiropractor - Ideal Wellness Chiropractic Center in Itaewon Seoul

More parents taking kids to chiropractor

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Would you take your child to a chiropractor? A growing number of parents are.

James and Evie have been going to the chiropractor since they were born.

"Alright Miss Evie, hop up on the table, you know the drill,"

At 3 years old, Evie thinks nothing of having her neck adjusted - a term chiropractors use for easing bones or vertebrae off nerves in the spine.

Evie's 5-year-old brother James is also a regular for well visits at the chiropractor.

Statistics show a growing number of parents are taking their children to chiropractors.

Dr. Butch Sonnier says he's seen a dramatic increase in the number of kids he treats.

"When a parent brings their children in to see me, 95 percent of the time they've already seen a pediatrician and they mention to the pediatrician that they're bringing the children to see me and to my knowledge there's very little objection to that point," said Sonnier.

Sonnier credits the popularity of kid chiropractic to increased acceptance among adults.

Alissa Lundy started seeing a chiropractor in college. When she had children, she had no problem taking her kids to one.

"I believe in traditional medicine, but I believe that there's also other responsibilities of parents not just to take their kids and go get medicated," said Lundy.

We know from research it takes less than a weight of a dime on a spinal nerve to affect nerve transmission.

Whether it's an adult or child, Dr. Sonnier says a long list of ailments can be traced to out-of-place vertebrae or bones in the spine that are pressing on nerves in the spine.

We know what spinal nerve, or what group of spinal nerves controls what activity muscular skeletal and then the organ systems of the body

In 5-year-old Kyle's case, it was a digestive issue. He wasn't having bowel movements.

When standard treatments failed, Kyle's dad brought him to Dr. Sonnier. Kyle calls him the tap tap doctor.

That's because the device Sonnier uses on him gently nudges vertabrae back into place with a series of computer controlled taps.

An engineer, Kyle's dad, Michael, was skeptical.

Suprisingly enough, it worked.

Within 24 hours Kyle's bathroom problem had resolved itself. He was going to the bathroom regularly.

After repeated ear infections, 9-month-old Bayne was on track to have tubes put in his ears.

Dad Anthony Drewes decided to try kid chiropractic first.

"He got three adjustments in three weeks and we've really not had any trouble with ear infections or doctors saying he needs tubes anymore," said Drewes.

Sonnier says aligning bones in the neck works for ear infections because it restores the ear's natural drainage system.

Bayne may be annoyed, but Sonnier says he's not in pain. In fact, it takes very little force to treat a child.

Kid chiropractic is not without its critics. Some researchers say there's not enough hard science to prove it works.

Dr. Sonnier does not spend a lot of time thinking about that. Instead, he focuses on the positive outcomes parents say their children get from his treatment.

When choosing the right chiropractor for your kids, experts say the more experience they have with children, the better. Also, ask for references and always keep your pediatrican in the loop.
